I like this thread.... here's some of mine.

a little asado I prepared for friends in Uruguay:

steaks from my favorita parilla in Buenos Aires:

here's a shot of the cooking supplies I had with me:

the best damn seafood fried rice ever, in southern Chile:

dinner on the Chilean/Bolivian border, best I could do:

and of course, who's up for some sheep's head stew?

Aw man Robb I hate(am astounded actually by) you folks that can cook like that with just that. I've got a full blown galley and just coming up with new ideas to add to Top Raman hurts my head. Anything fancier than that I either totally blow it or it all tastes the same. Thank God for hot sauce and salsas. I actually can make at pretty good salsa...it's what keeps me interested in eating. Nice job there Robb!!!

Wow AG, what a spread.

Please, educate a S.A. nOOb: "Plantains": a cooking cousin to the Banana?

Skip's has been in Merrimac, Mass since 1947, located right on Route 110, about a mile from the Merrimac / Amesbury border. You can't miss the classic neon sign. They claim their burgers are the best but the Suzy Q fries is what they are known for. Basically just a curly fry, but the part that makes them good is that they cut the potatos right there, fresh.

Si, senor! You can find plantains at most big grocery stores here. They are a little bigger than regular bananas, and always green. If you head south of the border, they get more common the farther south you go. They were part of almost every meal we had in C.R. They have to be cooked a lot- like they cut them up and simmer them, then flatten them and re-fry in honey. They're usually sweetened a little, and come hot, and are not mushy after all this cooking- still have firm texture. We liked them so much (heart of palm was yummy too! but that's another story) that I tried to cook them here. No good. Must return to central america!!
