LC4 front end "play"
I just replaced the Scotts Steering Damper collar/tower pin assembly on my 97 400 sc, which required that i loosen the triple clamp and let the forks drop a little so I could get the new piece in there.
I got it back together and everything looks good except there is a little fore aft play in the front end. By that, I mean with the bike on a stand, front wheel in the air, I can grab the tire and by pushing back and forth I can feel a little "play" , not a ton but definitely noticeable. The little riding I did on it I could feel it too. I am taking it apart again to check things out, just looking for some pointers here. ps. bearings looked decent when i was in there last time, and I don't think it had the "play" before. |

Is the "play" at the stem bearings or between the upper and lower fork tubes? I guess the only other possibility besides those would be bad wheel bearings.

maybe you already figured this out, but it's easiest to tighten that top bolt when the forks are slid down so they're in the lower clamp only. then slide the forks up, align everything, and tighten the pinch bolt that goes around the stem.
