OK, so we were riding from Darby Montana down to the hamlet of Shoup Idaho. We ride some really nice paved roads over a pass. We then stop for fuel and provisions. It's mid afternoon by now and we know we will somewhere tonight but not a motel. Cool.

John shouting for joy !

The road Tony routed us onto soon turns to dirt. And the landscape has changed.

Something really cool happens next. I'm coming around a cornor and what is standing right in front of me ? In the road before leaping up onto a rock outcropping ?
This Bighorn Ram !

Here you can see it in Jims photo in the backround. There were about 6 of them just stareing down at us as we rode under them. It felt like they would jump on us !

We stop at the Shoup Store. Closed, frankly I dont know how they stay open ! I mean there is no one out there ! Good thing we fueled up earlier.

One more of the Ram

And John at Shoup

We proceed on. We are headed for Panther Creek Rd and Morgan Creek Rd. We will ride it (they are 1 road) all the way down to Challis Idaho. Quite a distance. Tony suggests we take a side trip up to the Yellowjacket mines and check that out. Boy, we are glad he did. But before we get there we need to camp for the night. We find a great campsite "Panther Crick" alonside a creek again.

Here's Joe cleaning up. We all did. Yes that water took your breath away at first, but after we felt like a million bucks and ready for DK's supper.

DK chilling the wine in the creek

Me retieving one of those chilled wines !

We eat another terrific meal and bs around the fire before hitting the rack.
Good night ...............

Tommorrow we hit Yellow Jacket, Morgan Creek Rd, Challis, and the Custer Motorway on our way to the Yankee Fork Dredge. Oh and more wildlife with pics

Wow!! What a ride/report!

I just completed my first "Adventure Ride" this past weekend (PB500 Pre-Run), and I'm already thinking I'd like to move up from my XR400 to a BMW or KTM..Reports like this make me want to stop by the dealer tonight!!!

Thanks for sharing this ride with us...I think your going to have to plan another trip next year....for us to tag along on...

How long did the complete trip take?

With 6 riders it took us 13 days. But we rode with no time restraints and you could cut off in Boise if you wanted in 8 or 9 days. But we went beyond up to Hells Canyon. So we took 13 days.

So the next morning we wake up and of course DK has gourmet oatmeal ready for us. Complete with raisins and a hint of vanilla and real cream ! We have coffee and pack up then continue down Panther Creek Rd. Spectacular scenery and weather. A perfect 10. We will take a side trip up to the little ghost mining town of Yellow Jacket just as Tony Huegel suggested. I believe it was around 20 something miles in off Panther Creek.

Along the way we look up and see Mountain Goats this time. Look closely and you can see them. DK's $7k camera captured them.

We arrive at Yellow Jacket. I can tell you we saw no one else, certainly not other tourists. Just us and the Idaho backcountry.

Here's DK

After seeing Yellow Jacket we roundup and head back towrds Panther Creek Rd to go south towrds Challis that is still some didtance away. We get blown away again as Panther Creek/Morgan Creek rd's are breathtaking and not to mention a blast to ride !

DK

Tim

John

Jim

Myself

When I return we'll take you down the rest of the way where we pop out onto asphalt and have lunch in Challis before taking on the Custer Motorway. And photos of those trout I promised !

Been waiting for this report. When I see all these great places to ride it makes life seem short. Looking forward to the rest! A 1150GS would have rounded out the mix nicely, I could bring one along next time
