KTM 640 ADV Question about tank/fairing.

Yes I did search the Index LC4 post but couldn't find the info.
I currently have a KTM520EXC and I am thinking of changing to a LC4 type Engine for longer range stuff.

I really like the 640ADV, but I do some really nasty stuff sometime.
I was wondering if you can fit the LC4 Enduro or SXC tank on the 640ADV, most likely a 2003 (newer design and single front rotor) but I would look for a 1999+

I know I can fit bigger tank on the Enduro or SXC but I like the fairing of the ADV.

Also, can you easily remove the fairing and gauge on the ADV to fit a simple headlight.

If these 2 things can be done, anyone wants to trade a Super nice 520EXC CA legal for a 640ADV ?

You might do a search - there's been some discussion of this in the past. Mostly it was folks wanting to fit the Adv fairing to a standard Enduro, not the other way around.

I recall the general concensus was that it was possible, but not economic or very feasible for going back and forth. I believe the two bikes have completely different front subframes, so you'd basically have to swap entire front ends with all the bits and pieces having to go back and forth (including all the electrics, radiator mounts, fans, etc.).

I was just hoping to swap the tank
then remove the fairing/light/odo/speedo and replace with an enduro aftermarket headlight type .

I did the headlight part on a NX650, shouldn't be that bad to do on a 640ADV...

Anyone in the bay area / redwood city willing to show his bike for me to check it out ?

rocamojo's suggestion about getting the suspension setup by a pro is (literally) EVERYONES suggestion.

See THIS thread. You might want to ask Young Gun 640 how the big tank is mounted to his bike w/out the fairing assembly.

Thanks, I had seen that. I am positive I can do the swap over from ADV to enduro. Been there done that for other bikes.

I am weighting my options with the difference LC4 models.

why so keen?

Hi Christian.. why are you so keen to get rid of the big tank? its a very handy thing to have, and if you want to fit a smaller tank cos it's lighter... just fill the big one half-way...? My tank fits straight onto the bike, no need to fiddle with anything... I have fitted an acerbis headlight unit, works well and is small and out of the way..

My suggestion is if you like the LC4 adv.. get it an just remove the fairing and put an aftermarket headlight on... keep the big tank on... will save you having to fiddle with different seats too...

Any chance you have a picture of the headlight?

As far as the tank, I will have to see once I have the bike...

Doing some maintenance and have some pics for you christian.

Here is the underside of the tank:

Note there are two mounting points, both are recievers that slide onto rubber pucks or spools (for lack of technical terms).

Here is the bike underneath the tank:

The part I am calling a spool is near the centerline of the bike (follow the spark plug wire up and where it disappears is the spool), the part I am calling a puck is distal, attached to the front subframe (the fork is directly behind it)... so you will need the subframe to mount the tank properly.

Other than that, the tank rests on the main frame and is secured by a bolt that comes off of the rear subframe under the seat:

You can see the stud sticking straight on the right.

Those rubber covered seats for the front of the tank are identical to the ones on my LC4 E. Even the tank "ears" that fit on them are identical to the fittings on the LC4E.
The difference comes in the headlight mask and wiring.

I didn't know; thanks for the info. He is contemplating LC4s and tank changes. He was contemplating the SXC, which comes with a 9L I believe, so it probably doesn't have the hardware that the Adv has for its 27L, and the E with it's 18L.

So if he went with the E, he could more easily switch to a big tank, but in that case I would rather try and fit rear tanks (5L per side) from the rallye bikes for better weight distribution. Hard to find, but not impossible.

At any rate the E and the Adv have the larger oil capacity, he would only have to add an FCR and a SXC exhaust to match. Oh yeah, and he wouldn't need to find a cush hub either...
