Thumb Ear Plugs

I'm a convert ... thanks ADV!!!!! Been using the plugs now for about a month consistantly ... even some backroad blitzing ... when we had that great weather.

Had them out on purpose the other day for about an hour ride ... damn near went crazy with all that racket!!!!!

cRAsH ... I now fully appreciate what you were saying!!!! There's a beauty in zoning in with serenity ... yet still with more than ample info for the senses!!!!!!!

It is actually quieter with plugs in and shield open a notch than no plugs and fully closed ... way cool !!!!

Ear plugs are now always beside / with my keys ... take one ... take both!!!

I've taken ear-plug use to the next level: I wear 'em to sleep. We have this yellow lab...who sleeps in our bedroom...who sometimes snores and at least once a night yips and yipes in his sleep as dreams of chasing a frisbee I threw too far.

And not a bit of it do I hear anymore.

The problem is, I wouldn't hear her if she ever said shop's closed. Oh wait. That was a problem anyway.

And, if you keep using earplugs, you'll still be in 20 years!

Question

I have used ear plugs a few times and yes things are MUCH quieter. The problem is that I have used the el cheapo foam plugs and they make my ears itch like crazy. I mean it drives me friggen ape shit!!!!!
Do any of you have those fancy custom molded plugs, or anyother plugs that are better than the compressible foam? What do you think of them?
I'm 27 and have already suffered slight hearing damage due to riding and using explosives at work, I don't want to lose anymore of my hearing.

Thanks- Scary

Before going the custom route clean the crap from your ears...just kidding..

Seriously, consider getting the sampler pack from Aerostitch, they have both throw-aways and reuseable. Try a bunch, see if you like any of them. I found some plugs suck, some are good.

Custom Ear Plugs

These ran me 70 bucks at the audiologist

They are great when riding or shooting, they also plug into my Passport 8500.

A good local audiologist can fix you up.

I've found that some of the throw aways drive me ape shit too. I've tried several and settled on Aearo EAR Clasics. Bought a box of 200 pair of 'em:):

Seems like anything that has a "bell" shape makes my ears itch or ache after an hour or so. The straight taper type are just fine.

The "bell" type are 30 to 31 db and the straights are 29 db so I'm giving up a little.

As usual, YMMV

I usually forget the plugs, but I find that the little wax swimmers plugs - package of about 6 pairs from CVS type pharmacies are very comfortable.

Here is good 'rant' on earplugs - describes and rates various kinds - http://www.verrill.com/moto/rants/1999/991112rant.htm

I wear a shortie helmet and use an intercom and radio (the other half likes to tag along and it beats the bangs on the back of my head). She uses a full helmet with the speakers built in--mine hang out in the wind. By using earplugs we both not only enjoy a much quieter ride, but enjoy the music and can understand each other much better. The plugs muffle the sounds just enough to make them eaiser to understand. Not to mention preventing the direct blast of sound into the ear. Also remember that it is the long term effect of the lower frequencies that do the most dammage to us riders. What ever type work for you are not an option, but a necessity to prevent long term problems.
WHAT DID YOU SAY ????????:
