"01 Tiger Turning Off
Some of you will have seen my posts on the Tiger group for those who have not some of the '01 Tigers have a problem. They will turn off when you grab the clutch on deceleration. This happend when stoping of decelerating for a slow turn. As you grab the clutch the bike simply turns off. A quick hit of the starter will restart it but it can make for some tense moments.
Upon investigetion my dealer learned Triumph USA had received 12 new computers with a "beta" tune which is to solve the problem. Well my dealer installed a new computer in my '01 Tiger yesterday. When I asked him details he only said it was the newest computer and the tune was one no one else had. As it has only been one day I can not provide much review, but wanted to give a heads up. The bike feels much stronger. I thought it might be wishfull thinking but the service tech mentioned the same thing. Although it was a short ride home and few stops the bike did not turn off once. The conformation of more power came when I left a stop light and grabed a handfull of throtel. I have hit it hard a time or two but been reserved as I an about 100 miles short of full break-in. This time it was hold on for all I was worth and feel the front end remove it self from the pavement. More Power is a YES. From that point on I tested the entire power band and it was consintly improved through the entire band. I will provide a update after a week of riding. I hope none of you are having the same problem, but if you are there may be a fix. For those not having the problem, I'll let you know how the power and fule is in one wek. Your bike may start the problem just to get the new computer. Hint Hint. Rob Z. Black '01 Tiger (Borg) |

It may be a different root cause, but many Speed Triples do the same thing...mine included when not fully up to operating temp.

The Tiger's (mine and others I've talked to) turn off is not temp related. It appears to be a throtel body problem which is computer controlled. Now not being a expert I'm strictly going by what I hear the dealer saying as to the cause. I just hope it goes away ;)

At the risk of injecting GS content into the "non-GS bike talk" forum...
My 1150GS pulled an interesting trick when I installed the Remus sport collector on it with the pre-muffler. Apparently unburned fuel vapor would pile up in the pre-muffler at high-rpm closed-throttle decelleration, then when I cracked the throttle, it would detonate...and I mean detonate...as in she-BANG. Okay, no biggie, eh? Well the only time this would happen is when I was really romping through the twisties, running from about 6k up to rev-limiter. Say in 2nd, I bounce off the rev-limiter, cut throttle in prep for the next turn, then at about 6500rpm, start to open the throttle to power through the turn (all leaned over, of course), and she-BANG. Skeered me every time so much that I'd flinch and hose my line. Might have been an air leak, but I cranked everything down pretty well. So what's worse? Engine dying when you close the throttle in the twisties or a giant explosion causing brief soilage? okay okay...back under my rock |

I have to admit - Hearing what sounds like my bike exploding would not help concentration at any time. Those are time when ony you and the laundry lady know
how scared you are.The only time my Tiger turning off cane close to me unloading in my shorts was in city traffic. I was making a right turn on green and grabed the clutch to drop a gear. From that poing I was coasting. Normaly this is not a big deal. At 30mph you just adjust your line and restart the bike after you clear the turn. Well this time some jurk comming the opisite direction decided he could turn Left and squeeze in beside me. If I had power I could have reacted. As it was I began looking for the softest concrete I could find . Now thoes of you non-USA driver just reverse the Right and Left turn and you will get the idea. Just as I spoted my landing spot a car behind me, also turning Right layed on his horn at the jurk. This woke him up enough he stoped in the middle of the intersection allowing my very quite bike to complete its glide thorugh the turn without scraching his bumper.I guess we all need to cary an extra pair of shorts for those situations Rob Z. |

Tiger Turn Off - Fixed
Well it has been one week using the new ECU and the newest tune (I beleve 12). Sence their install into my '01 955i I have had no occasions where the bike would turn itself off when I pulled in the clutch while slowing for a stop or a low speed turn.
Also I felt the bike had more power from the very start and I still hold to that. Italso feels to gain RPMs smother and easier. I found it very easy to hit the rev limiter if I was not paying attention. Although I was enjoying the additional feeling of power my MPG was at 40 this fill up. Prior it was at 42mpg. I attribute the -2mpg to my heavy wrist action this week. Conclusion - My 2001 Tiger 955i had a problem in the original ECU. This may have been a hardware issue or related to the avaiable tunes. Triumph's replacement of the ECU, which contained the newest tune completly resolved this problem. Recomendation - If you are having a issue with your Tiger simaler to the one I was experencing have your dealer contact Triumph for a replacement ECU and the latest tune. Hope this helps. Rob Z. Thanks for the info on the ECU situation. I just bought a 01 Tiger about a month ago. It has shut off on me twice. Both while slowing down in 3rd, pull in clutch to shift to 2nd, BAM out like a light. Talked to my dealer. He said bring it in and they will redownload the tune. According to them, it should have the latest (Version 12). But they will do it again just to be on the safe side.
I will let everybody know when I get it back. Oh yea, they are also going to replace the clutch cable, as mine is part of the recall. Len Q. |

It is real nice of them isn't it.
It might have something to do with the fact that is was still crated up until I purchased it. Dual Sports in general do not fair well here in the South. Everybody (almost) wants crotch rockets or Harleys. Thats fine. The one I got was the only 2001 (green) at the distibution center. Hopefully, this "redownload" of Tune 12 will work. I hope it is not a defective ECU. We'll see Len Q 01 "Green Hornet" |
