I'm with Rad on this one - I've had the GS sideways from overenthusiastic downshifting while starting to lean into a turn (actually, my first day out with her she did that... I blushed and thought, "gee honey, don't you think that's a bit much on our first date?" :): ). I do it now and then now just for kicks... scares the shit out of my CBR-riding bro-in-law right behind me!

You'll learn your ways. No sweat.
I follow Zero & Rad on this. I picked up on the 'Skip' my first day with the GSA, the engine brakes you may be used to on other bikes does not run so smoothly on the GS.
You've got to blib/match the throttle or the bike skip's sideways. Not a problem just something to get used to.

It's good fun after a few tries and goes well with a Remus backfire.

hi Mike!

you're exactly right about the ABS cycling under deceleration; i had it happen several times this last week on wet dirt/mud roads while simply downshifting enough to get the required disparity between front and rear wheel speeds even though the rear wheel hadn't completely locked. however, since i wasn't braking (and didn't need to) at the time, there wasn't any effect on braking.

and yes, i typically 'blip' to match engine and wheel speeds when downshifting, but not always as much if i'm just playing with it in the dirt! :):

cheers!

Wouldn't the ABS pump start up anyway, whether the brakes were applied or not, when the rear ABS sensor told the system that the rear wheel had locked? I wouldn't have any effect, but might explain Monk thinking he heard it cycle......

I think it's very important with any new motorcycle to quickly familiarize yourself with the engine, transmission, brakes etc. I like to practice in large parking lots shifting up and down, locking the rear brake (turn the ABS off) and emergency maneuvers. I also highly recommend practicing using the ABS so you'll know what it feels like when the pressure modulators kick in. You should practice using the ABS in different conditions too. That way you won't be caught off guard and you'll know the limitations of the motorcycle. Each bike is a little different. For example, the standard GS has a very tall 6th gear so you have to be a little careful when downshifting into 5th. Just my $.02

I will take that advice very seriously..... I have a massive parking lot 5 miles from here to practice in. So you suggest turning off the ABS and locking the rear? Start at slow speeds and gradually increase for feel? Thanks for the .02.

Blipping is good.
It took me awhile when I first got the GS to smooth out the shifting so you don't hear that nasty 'clunk' when you downshift. Also, as the motor gets more miles on it it won't be so tight and should be a little less prone to doing this. Have fun -
