results From MAX BMW news letter
When your low fuel light comes on and you're wondering just how much farther you can make it, consider this: with little ingenuity and a lot of discipline, MAX BMW's Steve Mauk used barely over a gallon of gas to ride 105 miles on a G650 GS. Steve's astonishing 103.653 MPG was enough for him to take home top honors in Sunday's Tri-State National Fuel Mileage Rally.
On a day that was just about as perfect as weather in September can get, nearly 30 vehicles accepted the challenge to ride a hilly route through the Berkshires. Seventeen motorcycles lined up, covering the gamut from an R27 ridden by Joe Warner, to the brand new G650 GS that Steve Mauk rode. Despite an abundance of trash-talking about secret modifications and questionable apparel in the weeks leading up to the rally, in the end most riders elected to keep it simple. Body position and throttle control were the primary strategies, though Steve Mauk added a couple of pillows for comfort. The car guys (and gals) were more serious about engineering their aero packages and MAX BMW NY's Mike Kamm must have gotten some strange looks out on the public roads, as he coaxed 73.944 MPG out of his blacked out Nissan Sentra with a wrap-around spoiler that even covered his wheel areas! CLASS: BIKE UNDER 700CC STEVE MAUK 103.653 BRUCE LEMIEUR 95.023 GREG TEMPLETON 88.608 FRED JONES 80.092 JOE WARNER 76.586 JEFF PARKER 64.975 ANDREW PHILLIPS 64.935 MICHAEL CONWAY 50.700 CLASS: BIKE OVER 700CC CHRIS BENDA 75.485 MAX STRATTON 72.514 BETH STRATTON 71.575 SCHLING 70.328 JEFF FRISCH 67.093 JIM STODDARD 59.558 RICK BUTTERFIELD 50.823 GEORGE YONNONE 49.203 STEVE RENSLOW 49.065 CLASS: CAR MIKE KAMM 73.944 KEN SNOWMAN 49.716 GABRIELLE ISENBRAND 48.544 RONNY KIENHUIS 35.509 CLASS: HYBRID-DIESEL CAR HOBBIT 78.125 JONATHAN BARTELL 74.893 ARTHUR EVANS 48.276 LOUISE KODELA 38.803 CLASS: TRUCK CARTER, WILLEY 20.396 IT was a good day for riding. When I started I did not know how serious some of riders and drivers took this run. |
