I have ridden on mine 43.000kms. Mostly offroad. I was hitted twice with most populat issues: failed battery and sprag clutch (~16.000kms). Quite reliable bike (if I compare to my friends 2 ktm's 690ers than XCh is very reliable)

I'm glad to have put new shoes on my g650x. challenge The pair of sahara's on there were getting close to toast and just didn't work so well for me. I'm new to the DS area and wasn't sure where to go with tires, so I went a more intermediate route. I've got a tkc80 on the front and a mefo super explorer on the rear. After about 300mi of road i'm pretty happy with the setup. Handles well enough on the tarmac, and I can't wait to see how much better the setup will be in the dirt.

Really loving this bike even though its plastics are "textured" by the last few owners!

X versus Dakar

While not perfect, the X is a pretty reliable bike. When you take out the numerous battery failures (which got me too), the issues are far less extensive.

Performance-wise, the X can basically do everything the Dakar can do, but do it better.

HOWEVER -

The Dakar is basically done when you roll it off the showroom floor. It has great range, whereas you will be re-filling the X every 100 miles or so until you spend some money more fuel capacity.

The Dakar can do two up right out of the box. Passenger pegs for the X are expensive and I would hate to be a passenger on the back of the X seat as well as trying to get on.

The X has a 37" seat height. That can be a bit intimidating for some. The Dakar is much lower and has factory options for lowering it further.

Your comparison to refined KLR is spot on. If you were wishing for more performance with your KLR, then the X will give you that. But if you liked the turn-key adventure readiness of the KLR, the Dakar is probably the better bike.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRR . . . the new Husky 650 Terra may be a perfect compromise for you.

Thanks Marc. I'll have to read up on that. Only major issue there is I want to go used. I thought maybe TE610, but I'd like another BMW. Decisions, decisions. I did show the wife both and she likes the Dakar. Between that and the X, the Dakar is definitely closer to the KLR.

X- country!

You might consider the XChallenge's fine sibling the XCountry. Comes with passenger pegs. (Just add TKC-80's, xtank, HID headlight and a great basin bag.)
Mine has stock suspension and 19" front wheel (wha?) but I just did most of the WABDR (dot com) plus another thousand miles of dirt in British Columbia. A 250-lb bike might have been less demanding on the dirt but not the slab between dirt chapters.
I'm a pencil-necked whiner but I honestly think there's no better compromise for doing both freeway and steep rutted rocky sandy crap "roads" that get you to fantastic places.

Maybe you shpuld just pick a new Husqvarna TR650 Terra :):):) with almost same engine as Dakar and g650x...but then weight and offroad capabilities will be close to Dakar ones

Hi guys,

I'm just after a quick bit of information, hopefully someone can sort me out. I need to know the interior diameter of the radiator hoses on the x-ch in order to install a temp gauge, does anyone know it or have a spare hose laying around they could measure?

The numbers I saw on MCN's chart were 369lbs wet for the X and 430lbs wet for the Dakar. What advantages would the Tera have over the Dakar? Better suspension?

20+ pounds less weight and 5 extra horses, about $1500 less (vs a new Sertao), but a lesser warranty (1yr vs 3 yrs) and I would assume slightly less range.

X challenge front brake pad change ?

G'Day guys, sorry to change threads here. (I couldn't find this in the forum). How do I remove the pin in the Brembo caliper that holds the brake pads in place? It looks like it probably needs to be tapped out with a punch/drift and a hammer, but maybe it's threaded?
