Andy has been racing a Class 10 car (a Penhall I think) in SCORE this year. He came by the shop where I work and I spoke w/ him. He is concentrating on cars and still doing some select motorcycle events.

As for the "Hummer". Make no mistake the only thing Hummer about it is the fiberglass look of the body. It is a NOT a modified H3....

Perhaps because the man can drive any type of vehicle in any type of situation. He'll probably go race a couple F1 races just to show them he can beat them too.

And Robbie came out of the desert into pavement racing. If it has four wheels he's shown the ability to race it. Here's a man making a comfortable living and only needing to worry about left turns. No need to do anything else. But the desert is in his blood I expect that's why he goes to all the work to do those in his time off.

I find it real interesting Robbie choose Andy for his navigator. I think I understand why and I think its all about D2G. I can see Robbie going, look at that kid, Andy, Honda says bend over and he gives them a flying fickle finger of fate award. That man comes off the deck swinging and I want him on my team. He's hell on wheels.

Thumb

I am feeling the Gordon love in this thread!

The NASCAR crowd tolerates him but the average fan either hates him or doesnt know who he is. (He is the only full time owner-driver; and does this off road thing to boot. And was a gnats ass away from becoming half owner of the Yates Racing Team a few months ago.)

BTW, He just got fined $15,000 yesterday for throwing roll bar padding out of his car last weekend to cause a caution that allowed him to finish 10th. It really pissed off a bunch of people.
Watch on Sunday to see if someone puts him into a fence.
I've got a buck that says he wont see the checkers; and it wont be of his doing.

I realize that it is a social conundrum to be a GS rider and a NASCAR fan, but I'm tempering my enthusiasm by rooting for Robbie.

NEW YORK: NASCAR driver Robby Gordon led the 19-member Team Dakar USA through one of its final test sessions last week in preparation for the grueling Dakar Rally, which begins Jan. 6 in Lisbon, Portugal.

The three-day test in the desert of the southwestern United States was run between NASCAR's Nextel Cup races at Martinsville and Atlanta. Gordon drove his purpose-built H3 in the test that included navigator Andy Grider and provided all team members, including those new to the program this year, with a sample of what the Dakar experience could entail.

Running on terrain similar to what the team will encounter in the early stages of the 16-stage event through Portugal, Spain and Morocco, as well as the latter stages in Mauritania, Mali and Senegal, Gordon said he is confident in the team's ability and its chances of capturing the overall title.

"The mission of this test was to work out the kinks and make our preparations for the rally," said Gordon, a two-time Dakar Rally stage winner, the only American to do so. "We definitely could have been better prepared last year and we definitely didn't want to put ourselves in the same situation this time around.

"The test was structured as a mini-rally. We tried to cover as much terrain possible that would simulate the conditions that we may face in January and really put the H3 and the crew in some compromising situations, not unlike those that you can face in Africa on a daily basis. We intentionally put ourselves in some spots that we may face in the race so the guys could become familiar with each other as well as what they will have available to them during the race."

The rally covers more than 9,600 kilometers (6,000 miles) in a 17-day journey from Lisbon to Dakar.

You guys have it all wrong,

I've nothing against Mitsubishi, per se; but if they are so great at building cars, why are they not the first to fly the red sun on the NASCAR track? If you wanna sell cars in America, and if you are a force to be reconed with, why not jump in there? Are you afraid of name recognition and market share?

Toyota has and will reap huge bennies from this. They hold 7 of the top 10 in the Craftsman Truck series and that will soon rise in the Cup series as well.

Then, you ask, why does Toyota not reign supreme in Dakar?

All I can come up with is that Robby Gordon drives a Hummer in Africa, a Chevy racecar now and a Ford racecar next year, and Juta Kleinschmidt has pictures of VW's CEO naked with a donkey in a Tijuana brothel. And Bill Gates and Michael Jackson have no interest in off road racing. And Toyota makes no heavy trucks; like the MAN.

That sounds like sound reasoning to me.

Robbie Gordon had an offer from Ford to do a year in a Focus WRC and turned them down "to pursue his NASCAR career". Then he bitched about helping his team leader at Dakar, then the way he drove at Watkins Glen this year was just shameful.

No, sir, I just don't like him.

Grow up, the world is a big place and Nascar means shit compared to the Dakar. Also, assuming your Nascar/Baja legend will win the Dakar is a bit foolish considering the competition, no matter what brand hes driving for, and if you add the fact that hes driving an American car that should race Baja instead, odds arent really on his side. No place for big stars and showing off in the Dakar, when he races against names like Kleinschmidt, Alphand, VATANEN, Masuoka, Roma, PETERHANSEL, hes a rookie, its Dakar experience that counts, and how many times has he driven into Dakar? And there are other rookies, like Muller, who can possibly out drive anyone out there as far as car control goes.
