I just bought a 12mm hexkey over at Orchard Supply Hardware. Took me 6 stores and 2 hours to find it.

Went to Lowe's, Home Depot, Kragen, PepBoys, Orchard and Sears. Largest one any of them carried was a 10mm. Finally decided to go to a different Orchard and buy a 12mm hex bolt, 3 nuts and improvise a hex key. Found the 12mm hexkey hanging in the metric bolt section.

Orchards PLU # 9332750

I picked up a 12mm, 14mm, 16mm 1/2" drive hex set at AutoZone for less than 10 bucks.

I bought a 12 mm allen wrench at sears for about 6.00$

the 12mm is what you want, go to sears first..

Most hardware and parts stores stock allen wrenches up to 10 mm, and a 12mm is what you need. Apparently Sears has them, but I got mine at an O'Reilly's. It wasn't in stock, but they had a catalog and ordered one for me. It was in the store before noon the next day. Less thatn $4. It's just a standard 'L' shaped hex, but if you can find one to fit a ratchet that would work, too.

That's what I did. As for the liter strom, some people have reported that el cheapo spark plug wrenches, using the outside instead of the inside, will work.

or get a bolt with a 12 mm head and a few nuts on it locked on...to put in the allen head......?

BTW I did 2 weestroms last night..FYI for the DL650

IIRC

front axle torque 42 ft lbs...12mm hex (allen head)
front axle pinch bolt 16 ft-lbs 12 mm bolt
brake caliper bolts...26 ft lbs...?..forget...14mm?..

Actually it is 3/4". I used a bolt with a 3/4" head, put jamed a couple of nuts on it, and it works great.

Torque It

You need to get the socket/hex setup so that you are able to torque the wheel when you put it on. I have both, picked up the 12mm hex wrench at sears on the clearance rack for around $5. The 1/2" drive setup I ordered through a napa store for about $15.

You can find them cheaper but you get what you pay for, the cheaper ones will twist (softer material). Better tools come with Peace of mind when adventure touring.

Took a craftsman spark plug socket, turned it around, the outside wrench flats were the right size for the front axle on my 1000. Put a short extension through the socket and used my wratchet to do the job.

done

This is what I carry in my DL's toolkit.
A cut down spark plug socket.
I cut it down so I could put a small extension into the sparkplug end and still fit it in a 3/8" drive ratchet.
I had several old sparkplug sockets around and just sacraficed one to keep on the bike. (yes... I carry a 3/8" sliding T-bar too)
