Moab Day 4...

Well, what can I say...Moab delivered again Sunny and 74f

I headed out on my own this morning, aiming the Ktm past my failed Posion Spider venue and around the Moab Potash Plant. There I was on Shaffer road heading to link up with the White Rim Trail. 90 miles of ups, downs and rough riding. It was warming up quick but there was no time to stop until I was sure I would make the distance before dark. Most 4 x 4's need 2 days to cover this vast area as the trail winds along the Colorado River and offers spetacular vistas! It is a meca for Mountain bikers and I passed around 50 of them durring my 6 and a half hour, 245km journey

Steep switchbacks climbing out of the canyon

It seemed like forever and around 2 thirds of the way thru I was wishing it was over but in the end I was glad I did it. Soon I was heading into Long Canyon on my way back to Moab. It was a nice short little section that ran down a canyon with a fallen rock leaning against the cliff creating an arch over the roadway. Once back in Moab I decided that was enough for today and headed to the hot tub to soak my sores.

Tomorrow I hope to hook up with the guys again for a ride to Hurrah Pass and Chicken Corners! Forecast...sunny and 70f

great stuff Lappeman!

I am still riding every other day. Put the highway bikes away yesterday. Not going too far, but feels good to get out.

pretty quiet on here other than the Moab stuff.

Good stuff Rob!

I got out for a short ride yesterday, no snow here yet.

Kari's picture reminds me of when Steve and I rode out to a plane crash , north of Amesdale, in the snow.

An older pic.

Ready to roll!

Another favourite winter riding pic, Steve rode in from Thunder Bay to Dryden...I met him on the Bending Lake Road.
He rode about 800 km in this, where I met him was only about 200 km of riding for me.

Moab Day 5...

What can I say, sunny and 70f...again

Today I hooked up with the guys again and we ran up to Hurrah Pass and then over and down to Chicken Corners and the Colorado River Overlook. It was a nice run with lots of mixed terrain. The actual Chicken Corners obstacle consisted of a two track trail with a 500' drop on one side and a cliff rising on the other. It wasn't very scary at all and no one had any problems there. Once at the end of the trail, we took a short break and walked a small ledge trail around the cliff face. On the other side the terrain opened up to a wide plateau surrounded by hills and small mountains. Really nice country!

On the way back, 2whlrider and I ran a short bit of Lockhart road, playing on the slickrock and loose rock. We then continued on to some caves along Chicken Corners road. They where really cool, branching off in all dirrections and into the deep darkness where we didn't dare to venture. We backtracked our way back up to Hurrah Pass, passing many ATV's, 4 x 4's and side by side's. Lots of people out in the back country today and I'm sure there will be lots more this coming weekend. People keep rolling into Moab constantly and it's getting crowded here...like summer

The Caves

Tomorrow I will once again split from the group and head up to "The top of the World" trail...should be interesting.

Moab Day 6...

Well, winter finally hit here and the temperature plummeted down to 68f and sunny but fortunatly it's supposed to rebound to over 70f in the next two days.

I headed out this morning on Hwy 128 along the Colorado River. I had my sights set on a place called Top of the World. Trail rating...difficult I turned off at mile 30 at the old Dewey Bridge which was the old hwy 128 bridge over the Colorado but had burned awhile back. The trail isn't long and soon I was bouncing and slamming into ledge after rock ledge on the way up to the top. This is rough I thought! I passed a jeep along the way and after what seemed like eternity, I was at the edge of a thousand foot cliff. The view was pretty nice, overlooking Onion Creek and Thompson Valley. There was 2 guys on quads from BC already there. Not long after I arrived, a CRF450 bounced it's way along the rocks to the top, followed by 4 more quads and the jeep. As soon as the CRF guy stopped, he took off his helmet and said, Holly crap was that rough! I smiled and nodded We all took turns possing on the edge and after about a half hour I headed back down. On the way down, I was trying to stop and take a photo and obviously wasn't paying attention as the rear end kicked out on a ledge and as I came to a stop, I fell over against the ledge. Nothing major, I just swore at myself for not paying attention.

After surviving the Top of the world trail, I decided to head across the hwy 128 bridge and up Dome Plateau road. This turned out to be a confusing maze of trails and roads that weaved across the country side consiting of rocky climbs, downhills and dessert riding. It finally brought me out to a nice cliff overlooking the river and then to a arch called La Boca Arch. Further down the 35 mile trail I came across huge caves carved into the sandstone cliffs. There was an old water trough there filled with stagnant water. Beside it was the remains of a cow that obviously tried the water Past the cliffs a few miles I came across old abandoned mine cabins. Apon further exploration I found the main mine tunnel big enough to drive an ATV into and 5 other mine entrances that were all tied together and branched off far into the darkness. After exploring the mines, I was back on the highway and after a short ride, I was exploring an old Cave House. There's quite a few houses carved into the soft sandstone around here, so this was a great opportunitly to see what they looked like inside. It looked like it had a living room/kitchen and washroom on the main floor with a fireplace in the living room. Stairs lead up to one or two bedrooms with holes where the windows used to be.

After six days or hard riding my body is aching, my butt hurts, my gear is damaged and my rear tire is almost bald having been chewed up by the numerous trips on the razor sharp rocks. 2 days to go here, so hopefully I can keep it together for a few more memorable rides!

Lappeman - Fantastic photos. Just breath-taking. And great ride reports. When I read "winter finally hit here" you had me - hook, line, and sinker. Then I read "68F" and I knew I had been duped.

As others have said, great stuff, and thanks for sharing Rob.

Cheers!

Great pics. I'd love to see that scenery from 2 wheels some day.
What experience level do think is needed to comfortably and
Safety enjoy that area ? It looks like vandalism isn't rampant
At these old structures, nice to see.
