Or an 84. They were the same.

Looks unmolested.

If it hasn't run in a couple of years, replace the left crank seal before riding.

Reeds can be hard to come by. Start looking now.

Tires Unlimited had Metz tires for it, they worked really well.

Ditch the airbox and jet to match makes for nice power. Hot pipes plus that equals fun 3rd gear wheelies on the gas.

Remember: There's a hinge in the frame when off throttle in a sweeper and you hit a dip.

Have fun.

It's an 83".
The bike gas been ridden a couple of times a year. Needs TLC, a good cleaning and serviced.
The tires are Metzlers.
Going to pull all the plastic today as the temps are above zero. The rest can wait.
The pieces required for complete restoration are all available pin eBay and through Yamaha.

I still have to talk to the former owner and get the history on the bike. I am hoping it may have been the one I bought in 83.

Were it me , I'd replace that crank seal. Can loan you the puller.

Had rd/rz's for 20 years. Isn't much I haven't done to them. Or broken on them.

Pull the ypvs and clean them. Good system that works best clean.

Wheel bearings. Replace from a bearing store.

Re and re swingarm. Always neglected.

Rd400 carbs are 2mm bigger. Cheap upgrade.

So many fun things can be done...

Thanks for the pointers.
As it stands, I am going through the plastic, cleaning and repairing.
Slowly stripping the bike so it's all ready to back together "clean". It's my way if organizing the rebuild.
Will pm you when I need your assistance.
Thanks

Nice Ron, 86', the fast model...
I decided on the 83', because its the first year model and the fact I can put a vintage plate on it this year. Insurance will be $150.00 instead of $900.00.

We did an "83 as well... I'll see if he has pictures of that one.

I prefer the 83, with the round headlight, very classic looking bike.

Seems to be a lot of them for sale. Kijiji in Southern Ontario for example.CBR125= pages of them. Wonder why? maybe people buy them as a learner bike and then want to move up to a bigger bike.. I like the small bikes also, but prefer dualsport over street only. Its like getting the mileage of a scooter, but being able to go off road.

Looks to be a pretty good one. Fender even looks good. It will sound better than any harley. Multi-cyl 2 stroke sound is great.

Most likely the 2-fitty street bike phenomena. Buy first bike, ride it for a season, sell it to upgrade. Or buy first bike, realize you don't like it, sell it.

I've got my FJR for touring on, bought the CBR for around town use (best tank over 100mpg/UK). Then Honda came out with the CRFL, which suits riding around here a whole lot better. Truth be told I still prefer riding the CBR over the CRFL. But I sure like the places I can take the CRFL that the CBR would blow goats on.

No matter, It's paid for. I pulled it off Kijiji until the early spring.

Looking at that ignition without the sidecover brings me right back to the Tioga Pass. You are going to have a solid runner for many years, and the best thing about having a beater bike, is it saves your better bikes from racking up the odometer on the utilitarian type rides, preserving the good bikes much longer.Sorry for calling it a beater.
