Wow got your work I see. Going to have too research how to keep my tent warm at night. Oh well that's why it's an adventure. Would not be the first friggin cold night camping on bike. Probably not the last either.

Yesterday...

That was us Nanabijou but I wasn't on "my" Ktm...wish it was mine It was NorthRider's Ktm 950! What an amazing bike! Thanks NorthRider for letting me use it!

NorthRider was looking to do some highway riding on Sunday, so we decided on going to Grand Marais, getting some food and heading home. We left NorthRiders place around 12:30pm and headed south, he on one of his many African Twins and me on his Ktm 950 which he so graciously offered up...couldn't turn that one down

We met up with Mike S just across the border and Mike brought us up to the old Border Crossing. We've been to the crossing on the Canadian side but never on the US side. After negotiating rough, wet, snow and ice along the road we arrived at the site. There were a few building around that we decided to explore. Now, I've heard stories from other riders, that no sooner had they stopped and dismounted at the old border, when an SUV pulled up or a helicopter was flying around overhead. I thought nothing of it but no sooner than 5 minutes after we arrived...what do know, an SUV with "Border Patrol" on the side pulls up He just smiled and said he "was just in the area" and that he could see that "there was no way we hauled those bikes across from the Canadian side" and then was on his way. We passed him further up the road as we left...just making sure we left, I guess.

The old crossing looking toward the Canadian side

Checking out the old buildings at the crossing

We motored down to Grand Marais and it got colder as we ran alongside the big lake. It was really nice when we were further from the lake. We stopped in at the café in Grand Marais and had some dinner and then said bye to Mike and headed for home. At the border the line of Canadians heading back in was ridiculously long!

Little bit of food in Grand Marais

Ridiculously long line to the Canadian side

Almost home

In all we covered about 320kms and had a great ride! Thanks to Mike S for the tour and company and special thanks again to NorthRider for the use of the nice bike!!

Lappeman - I thought it was you - with your silver helmet and cam.

I've always wondered where that crossing was. At the (former) Pigeon River Provincial Park there is a plaque that states that the crossing was nearby. However, I was never able to find it. Could you include a Google Earth image of where the crossing is located?

Thanks - great report by the way. I'm busy grading exams and assignments right now. Hopefully - I'll be free later this week.

Hey Mike!

About 2kms before the border on the Canadian side you turn on Devon Road hwy 593, go about 8kms up and keep left onto Border road (not sure if there's a sign or not) which goes straight at a hard right hand turn on Devon rd. Follow that down to the old border. Buildings on right are the old crossing offices but are private property. From the US side, about a km past Grand Portage casino entrance turn right up old hwy 61 and follow to the end, about 16kms. Buildings on the left, looks like a couple of them may be used as summer getaways.

Rob, sounds like you and Feliz had a good run. I thought hey may have given you the "The Turd" to ride, as he apparently named the Transalp.
How was the 950? Rumour has it they handle pretty good for a big bike

BackRoader and FINNDIAN, it's a great bike! Doesn't look that big of a bike when you first look at it but sit on it and ride, you can feel the weight and see the pear shaped tank down to engine setup. Really wide, a lot wider at the engine than I thought it would be. The extra weight seems to be placed low though but you can feel it at slow speeds and when you ride into a corner too hot

Tons of power...love that power Little more gas range would be nice though. I know there's expensive tanks you can get for it that will increase the distance...would make a nice gravel/blacktop touring bike for sure.

FINNDIAN...I still can't figure out how you can ride that thing like a dirtbike, leaving the hwy at hwy speed and heading into the crap through the ditch and over and then back onto the hwy at speed still Guess I'll just have to get more seat time on one

great ride yesterday

it was a great way to start the riding season.
ROB looked very good riding the KTM.

thanks to MIKE S for meeting us at the border and taking us on a short side trip

ROB thanks for coming along, i know you probably find highway riding boring. at least you found that old fire tower that i know you are going to visit later this season.

i had a fantastic day.
