Take the "h" out of Thanksgiving and what do you have? Tanks.
![]() ![]() I took these pictures today. Late November here in Wisconsin. I was on a mission to find a Tank. There was a thread in JoMomma that inspired me to go on this quest because years ago, I used to be part the United States Army Reserve serving as a 13 bravo - Cannon Crewmember, Field Artillery if you will. I used to run one of these bad boys, an M110 Howitzer. ![]() The barrel of this guy may not be pointed directly at you, but rest assured, if you are within - I forget - 17Km, I think. He will ring your doorbell. ![]() I'ts welded shut, and that's probably a good thing. The barrel is rifled, and I spent many hours cleaning it instead of shooting it and was hoping to get a picture. Without giving away too much detail in the interest of National Security, I'll just say that there a few things missing in these next few photo's. ![]() ![]() They even have the hatch welded shut, otherwise I'd show you the controls. Those three little rectangles are windows that you look out that are pretty much bulletproof. I only got to drive a few times. Sarge had the honors, but we all had to learn each others job...... in case. ![]() Back in the day, and I don't mean to brag, but I could load that 200 pound projectile by myself even though there are two handles meaning it's a two man job. I don't think I could pull that off today. ![]() This park is just west of Union Grove, Wisonsin on Hwy 11 if you want to see it. They have two tanks and an anti-aircraft weapon. Before you go calling an M110 a tank, be careful in the crowd you're with. Old military guys will get pissy because techinally it's a Howitzer, not a Tank, and quite honestly I don't know the difference. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If we're under attack, and someone tells you to "Man the forty!!" Don't hesitate to spring into action, because it comes with directions. ![]() Enough of my blabbing. The rest speaks for itself and I'm sorry about the picture quality if you can't read it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() God bless out troops. ![]() |

Newer tanks, much like the airhead - oilhead debates!!!

From a trip through a giant armory in Hawthorne Nevada the flag pole is made out of gun barrels probably 100' tall the flag is the largest I have ever seen.

great museum
Next time you are coming down I-95 stop in at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. Stop in at the museum. They have Anzio Anne the rail mounted cannon that we captured from the Germans, one of every tank ever made and a neat museum. They also have the only shoulder fired nuclear weapon. The shell had a effective range of about 4 miles, but the weapon only launched the shell about 2 miles..or something like that... Hmmmm.
When I was in officer basic there, they had and still have, what we called the "tire shooter". It was the largest mortar ever built. You could climb in the chamber..thus the tire to keep people out. They fired it only once back in the 60's. It broke windows out for several miles. All wheeled and track vehicles are developed there including the Jeep. They also liked to shoot holes in things. Once when we were on a little camping trip behind the fence we came upon a field with about 100 airplanes, WW2, captured Russian stuff, Korean War, etc. They brought them in to shoot holes in them to test new types of shells, etc. Greatest thing was night tank firing... way cool to see those shells bounce off stuff.
