Question '91 GSPD single headlight conversion

...if I was going to loose the 16# roobar/fairing set up and wanted to go to the single headlite and flyscreen as on the R80GS, where do I start?

swap!

I think you're best bet would be with someone wanting to do a PD conversion and was looking for the parts. Otherwise, you'll need to either rig something of your own (with a solo headlight and trailtech computer or something like that), go for the OEM set up piecemeal (expensive), or go with a set up from Touratech.

Put out an offer to trade your PD for a standard model bike plus cash. Get a 1988-1990 model R100 and you'll have the single headlight you crave. I have no clue why you'd want to do this but hey it's your money. This is the headlight setup you'd be getting:

When you're done, find an Acerbis / Wudo / HPN 11 gallon tank and install that to the bike. You'll have the lighter bike with a lighter tank that holds more gas. It'll be uglier but the PD tank without the roo-bar is ugly too. Plus you won't feel bad if you bash the Acerbis tank. To damage a PD tank at this point would be criminal (and they are nylon--not the same as most dirtbike tanks--and they can crack).

List of things to get

Time
All parts for the head light
Need speedo from a R65/ST/R80GS or R100 from 88 or 89
Oil relocation kit would be great time to install
You might to reseach a new wiring loom for that year bike
other wise you will have an abundance of wire that you won't be using.

Not a hard mod. Collecting all the parts .. is the hardest part.

Love my bike. Just the little mods..makes it work and run better.

Original Cluster

I have the original instrument cluster/ headlight bucket from my 88 GS from a project that I am working on. It should mount right up. The wiring is a little different, but not to far off. Also, keep in mind the tach from the 88 was an option that sat off to the side opposite the clock.

I went from the original 88 instruments (no flyscreen) to the TT IMO-300, and I have an Acerbis headlight mask up front-- it's not perfect yet.

I like the scaled down look and weight loss without the fairing and roo-bar garbage.

Let me know if you would like closeups of just the headlight assembly or more info.

The HPN kits are way cool looking. This is where I'm thinking of going.

This is where Touratech sources their big tanks for the airhead GS's.
Ciao, Steve

Yes, this is what I've been considering. I understand the roobar/fairing set-up weighs about 16#...I'm thinking lighter simpler. The tank would be a nice change when I can find one and have the $$$. I'd like to have a smaller tank for local riding.
Clean mine up...came out pretty good...

I traded one of my Silver carbon fiber mufflers ..for the tank. There are lots of tanks out there. Just wait it out.

So far I haven't used the tank... it's sitting in the gargage with new petcocks ..ready to be put on at any time.

Did the reverse last spring, round headlight G/S to roo bar fairing. The single biggest time expense was rewiring the instruments. On the roundlight models the idiot lights plug into the instrument panel with a round multi-pin connector-- the roo-bar models will have be adapted to this connector; an entire roundlight main wiring harness is easiest way, but you'll have to go new (200$ at least) as used harnesses are very hard to locate. On my roo-bar retrofit i used LOTS of shrinkwrap and soldering to make a detachable factory-style connector for the idiot light cluster-- it's weathertight but took MUCh time to set up right. I did well, everything worked on the first try.

You will spend much time on this facet unless you luck into the correct harness-- even then it's a lot of recrimping and soldering connectors.

BTW, the weight diff is not all that large. I weighed both setups before installing the roo-fairing-- i doubt the overall weight gain with the fairing and roobar is even 10#. That single headlight pod complete w/ lamp, speedo, flyscreen and ignition switch weighs several pounds. I thought the extra weight of the roo on the old G/S forks would immedialtely require heavier springs, heavier oil etc-- did'nt need it. With the exception of not wanting to drop the roo bar hard in the dirt, i would'nt trade the newer fairing for anything. If i ever get another GS just for hard offroad, i'll go for the roundlight. As it is i'm onroad 95% of the time, and the roo is the better ticket there.

If you still insist, the roundlight parts are out there used, but it won't be trivial to find them, nor cheap. I looked for years to find a painted 'flyscreen' for the roundlight GS (87-90), got one in SF for $75, i seriously doubt you'll find that kind of gem used. New is in primer, must paint, and currently $160 on the Hammersley fiche

good luck homes

Not to hijack the thread, but does this mean that you have the above mentioned flyscreen sitting in a closet waiting to sell it to me since you switched to a later style set up? I, too, have searched for one for a long time!
