Well, I'm another one who would've bought one of those instead of a KLR if they were only available here. Yamaha is missing the boat. Yamaha quality is better.

Balance of love

Don't get me wrong XT660rs are good bikes but I just wanted to balance the arguement by saying that I have one and I'm really not that impressed.

The build quality is good but the material selection is not as good as it should be - look at the engine cases - they rot from day one with the paint blistering and the metal turning to white powder (recall talked about but never happened).
You're right about the tank - too small. Fuel economy is ok (65impgal - F800GS better!) but the engine is not one you'd ever fall in love with - it is very rough and the fuel injection feels broken but Yamaha repeatedly say it's not. Its character is better suited to town than the motorway. Did I mention it's heavy? Emissions gave it two exhaust headers and two cans. At over 190kg it's just too much (yes I know they're cheap) and it carries the weight really high. Using a drysump is also a shame for servicing simplicity and I can't believe they needed to.
If it weren't for the above my XT would be coming around the world with me next year. I just don't like it enough to want to spend that amount of time with it - we'll just end up falling out with each other

What you say is really edteamslr,
Yamaha has some problems and don't agree with it, we're always advising them and don't hear us.
In Brazil, this is the bike that as the better price, we don't have options. Two cylinders are to rare here, and, no different bike to buy, like Transalp, KLR, etc. We can import, but the price will kill us.
For instance, I'm like too much this bike, I use it to trip, on on and off-road, and it goes to good.
Of course, it is not a BMW, but, is the only we can have here.
In the future I'll buy a new Ténéré, probably, or a F800GS...
Keep in touch...

hey folks, is this thread only for show up or can you help me with my technical problem?

I have '04. XTR bought used with little below 20tkm, and now with 42tkm on clock there is a strange sound coming from engine, for me is difficult to localize it and my mechanic couldn't find anything superficial, and other one asked for more than 200€ just to open it and look for damage.

So sound is more clear when bike is warm

cold
http://s270.photobucket.com/albums/j...V02359cold.flv

I read somewhere that this can be camshaft bearings or even piston i don't know, can you help me with some suggestions i see OTR is very popular here and they have some camshaft and engine modifications. Anyone had similar problems?

My 05' XTR has now 80.000 km and don't gave me problems until now.
I try to hear the sound of the engine, but it was a little bit hard.
Can you send it for my e-mail?
