Dirtbike or dual sport winch?

Anyone put something like this on a bike?:

http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catal...rTarget=browse

Or seen it done? It says it weighs 11 lbs. Not that I'd want 11 lbs hanging off my bike most of the time, but in certain places at certain times... I may have a need for one.

the issue before the weight is the amps consumption.... do you think that your charging syst. is up to the task.....

on Jeeps....most people have dual battery set up..... one to start the engine...and one used to winch.... if your engine crap out....

The other way would be to carry a come -along and a long prolypropelene (sp.) cable .... 20 feet should do it.... otherwise a light bike is the ticket

Oh yeah, it would have to have a seperate battery. I forgot about that. Maybe 20 lbs total added?

Manual winch is better if you're thinking about maximum usability in "really fucked" scenarios.

How far can something like that spool out?

And how much weight could it handle? Could I lift 400 lbs straight up a cliff?

400 pounds? absolutely.

BUT, do you really think it's a good idea to be in a place where you'll need it when you're by yourself?

If you have somebody with you, it's easier to pick the bike up and carry it.

This is one of those "there's got to be a better way" moments. Something manual, but not the gargantuan come-along.

Here's something. I have one but doubt I would carry it all the time.

I keep a ratchet tie-down in the under seat box. The model with 2 hooks on each end. it can only pull around 6" at a time, then you have to loosen it up and take another 6 inches, but it's better then nothing. But it does have a nice long strap that can be used as a tow rope. Also can be used for holding gear down, parts back on, getting the tire back on the bead, etc... Lot of good uses. And it's small to.

Uh... no?

Why is it that it seems like an even better idea now?

Don't want to jinx it. Still scheming. Have a lot of fund raising to do and lots of time to plan.

By the way, if I use a winch it will be for a segment of a trip, then it would be uninstalled and mailed home or whatever. I wouldn't just ride around everywhere with a winch hanging off my bike.

That's an interesting idea, thanks. How much do you think you could lift with it?

A hundred foot coil of good poly rope and a couple of two spool block and tackel weighs a lot less and is just as capable as a cable comealong for carrying on a bike . I cant talk bad about the comalong , I used to have an old beater adventure truck , I carried two comalongs and a high lift jack and a shovel . I might have taken a little longer but I could damn near go anywhere . SEYA
