When did the forestry service begin hanging what I assume are beehives from trees?

I think those are beetle traps, hard to tell with my beer goggles on.

That might make more sense. Saw one today up on Trey Mountain that had fallen from the tree. Under the assumption that it was a beehive I didn't dismount to go check it out.

Pay no attention to Spacelord... He's a moran.

Coming home from work today on the KLR/Hack I passed a couple ADV'ers on Persimmon that looked lost. I turned around and asked if they needed anything. They were doing the TET and needed to find groceries and a place to camp. Got them set up on the creek and their bellies full from the U joint.

That's awesome Clay. How are they liking the route so far? I helped a bit with the GA/ NC route. I hope they'll do a ride report.
I've been seeing those Bee Hives all along High Shoals up to Tray since the gates opened. My guess was that someone, maybe UGA, is trying to catch some wild swarms. Honey bees have been dying off in recent years.

Somebody's gonna need to shake one of these things to get a definitive answer. Please report back with the results.

One of the guys is retired and bad hip, etc., so they opted out of Charles Creek. They are on 250's.

It was a good evening, we have an informal group of guys that meet the last Tuesday of the month for dinner, a couple beers, and a couple hours of BS. They jumped right in with the group.

Was on Canada Creek (east side) yesterday and then on down to Winding Stair to pick up Bucktown Rd (FS 28-2) which is one rocky SOB. Stopped at the store on GA60 where it picks up Cooper Creek and met Slowride and his wife two-up on their F800GS. Nice to meet y'all.

Nice to meet you Bob. My wife was joking.... I didn't really dump her in the creek

Yeah we had a nice time doing this...

Until I tried to catch us some of this...

The stuff in the pot is Solomon Seal "taters," Indian cucumbers, and a dozen or so assorted wild greens and flowers. Hillbilly-style.

So anyway, I had tied off my stringer with two rainbows dangling in the water to keep them fresh while I tried for fish #3. When I got ready to move on to the next spot, I find that my stringer is much heavier, and much floppier!

You'll notice the bike in the picture.... so this is not an off-topic post, right?

Now I've spent my life in these mountains. Never seen such.... anyone else? I guess it had snake-type teeth and couldn't let go.

After I took my pics, I decided to let him go and give him my fish. So I unstringered the fish.... he sat there for a few seconds, then--gulp--swallowed the trout the rest of the way down.

Finally, I picked him up and threw him back in the creek. He had little legs, but I really don't think he could walk on land.... he never tried. But he flopped like a fish in my hand when I picked him up. Strange critter (14-16" long, and maybe 1 1/2 pounds?).

I've seen the giant salamanders of Asia--scary, mean-ass predators. Are they supposed to live here, too?

Yeah, when I got home and found them online (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellbender ) I realized I had heard people talk about them before--I had just never seen one myself. Really took me by surprise!
