Hellbender...

WTH? That is a strange critter. I have never seen anything like that in a trout stream.
I would have killed him, assuming he was some type of invasive asian snakehead frankenfish....
heck, I would have probably called them the game warden to alert him of the invasion.

Good to know he belongs here. That's an impressive feat to swallow that trout.

I think they are even on some sort of endangered species list.

Thanks for the late-night "one bar of cell service" hammock-search DD. When we sobered up, we remembered the backpacking store on Blood Mtn.

Yeah, eno. We don't really sleep in it, we build our fire beside it and use it as a chair--keeps us and our firewood dry--we've spent a lot of rainy nights sitting in it. Of course that means it was covered in burn holes, which is where it blew out (quite suddenly and drastically).

But it would still be fine if she hadn't--you know-- given me that look......

But we've got a brand new one now.... good for another 10 years

You'll notice the bike in the picture.... so this is not an off-topic post, right?

Now I've spent my life in these mountains. Never seen such.... anyone else? I guess it had snake-type teeth and couldn't let go.

After I took my pics, I decided to let him go and give him my fish. So I unstringered the fish.... he sat there for a few seconds, then--gulp--swallowed the trout the rest of the way down.

Finally, I picked him up and threw him back in the creek. He had little legs, but I really don't think he could walk on land.... he never tried. But he flopped like a fish in my hand when I picked him up. Strange critter (14-16" long, and maybe 1 1/2 pounds?).

I've seen the giant salamanders of Asia--scary, mean-ass predators. Are they supposed to live here, too?

Dang. That is soooo cool! A salamander on steroids. I would love to find one. I did not know they were in this part of the USA. SR

That was us! Garth and I made it home to New England Sat night. A ride report will be posted soon. I didn't want to let another day go by without thanking DirtDabber for his generous assistance and comeraderie. Georgia is a beautiful state and Clay is a great ambassador for it.

On our trip, we enjoyed the southern hospitality that we experienced daily but nothing prepared us for the "ADV hospitality" we received when a KLR with a hack stopped by to say hello. Thank you again for a fun night and a place to stay! I hope to return the favor some day.

I've been seeing those Bee Hives all along High Shoals up to Tray since the gates opened. My guess was that someone, maybe UGA, is trying to catch some wild swarms. Honey bees have been dying off in recent years.
Hi!
I'm one of the strays that DirtDabber rescued. Thanks for the work on the TET sections we were riding. It was all great riding. I'll post up a RR next week with pics and details. It's great to be able to see your area without running afoul of the law and land owners. Without the TET tracks, I wouldn't even attempt it. Thanks again.
