LC4 Main Swingarm shaft/nut removal....

HI. Got an 04 LC4 Enduro and am in the process of removing the swingarm and bits.
The shaft that goes thru the swingarm and rear engine casing won't come out.
The nut on the left comes off OK but then you are ment to drive the shaft out with the nut on the right attached. Except the nut is located in the recess of the frame by weld. Not actually welded together but the nut is held in place by the weld.

Any idea how to get around or thru this?

Isn't the weld just so to keep it from spinning.
Knock it out.
I would put the nut back on the other side loose, even with the end thread and give it a couple of whacks with a brass hammer to get it moving and then use a brass drift or some such to push it on through.
What am I missing?
When you grease all those loose rollers be careful when they get loose. You can lose one.

BMWKTMBILL: The weld sits proud of the nut so it wont slide out. Need to grind a slot so the nut can come past the weld.

all ya need to do is grab the nut with a set of needle nose pliers and turn it so that flat side is along the the welded area. this should give you enough room to pound it out. i've done this many, many times and it always comes out. i dont think id be taking a grinder to my frame quite yet....

Yep, the old needle nose plier trick is the ticket! But if you really want to grind on your frame, good luck with that...

Unscrew the long bolt from the other side. That weld keeps the nut from spinning. You should be able to fish it out after you get the swingarm off.

Thats what I did. When I stripped my swingarm after 25000 km & a fair bit of wet stuff all the bearings still had nice clean grease in them, the lower shock one was worn but all the rest were good.

OK. I'll put the angle grinder back in its box and have a look see for the pliers then. I just wanted to be an animal for once.
The bearings and shaft on the lowest part of the main frame where the 2 connecting rods attach are completely dry/rusty/pitted. #50 51 52. Looks like that area hasn't seen grease since it came out of the factory. Bearings and seals are in NZ but the shaft is ex Austria. Will have to reassemble with some grease till parts arrive. 3 week wait.

The Prolever crank part was still greased up and OK. I managed to pump grease via the grease nipple into that part as well. Amazing what leaning on a grease gun will do!

Well i'll be buggered. I gave the offending nut on the main swingarm shaft a light tap with a screwdriver in a clockwise direction as i didn't have a plier suitable and it rotated. Damn near pull the shaft out with my hands now.

hey, if you ever come to Memphis, stop by. You can use my grease gun on my bike because I've never gotten a drop in!

I put the offending part in the vice with the nipple toward me, curled my tongue and wet my lips........... sorry wrong website.
The vice part is true and I then put the grease gun with a fixed hose in it - not flexible - and lent all 78kg of me on it. And then gave it a good pumping. Grease was squirting out all over the place.

If it's no go on the grease nipple use a little propane torch first.
Or if that fails unscrew the nipple if it will and push some grease through to check it.
That get's the old hard grease loosened up and then usually it's a go.

Stop and buy a new end for the grease gun or a new hose with an end if yours is old.
That does wonders too.

It's kinda funny that sometimes you come across a problem that's THAT easy to solve and you just have no idea how to deal with it even thouth the solution is right there somewhere. I just find it fascinating - happened to me many times too. Can't exactly think of a particular situation but it has happened and I do think it's fascinating :)

No offence anyone - just the thought.
Good luck for the future and let's hope it doesn't happen to anyone (at least not anywhere soon...)
