Bluhduh PD Speedo Woes

My roof leaked on my leaky speedp and now it's FUBAR!

What's A man to do?



It was half full of rusty water when I took the first ride on it the other night. The odometer works but the needle is sticking and not fuctional.



Anybody ever fixed one of these before.

Could it have Rusted that "MUCH" from just a roof leak? Looks like it has had some water in it sometime before. Maybe it was that plunge that watered down your tranny fluid?...........Ya Think?
Until we can FIX that *#@!^ing Roof, better break out a camping tarp! If you need one, I have one,....maybe two.

Try googling up a speedo shop in your neck of the woods. I learned my lesson a long time ago on this one, too many specialised issues involved.

If you just want to get going, put a bike speedo somewhere while you send it off to get fixed.

I had these guys fix the bouncing needle in my R100gs motometer speedo. Cost 100, done in one day.

Try this

I did one a month ago. water seems to run down the trip reset and puddle in the bottom of the case. There is a goretex type breather but it must take forever for the water to evaporate. It looks worse than it is. I used maintenance spray, electrical cleaner and cotton buds to remove the rust. If you remove the three screws holding the head to the cable drive and loosen and rotate the odo drive. You may find that this is the sticky part and a clean and relube works.
Further investigation requires needle removal..hardest bit is getting up the courage..then take out dial screws and it all comes apart easily.
To get the needle off I used a small tack remover with a bit of card to protect the dial. The dismantled resting place of the needle lined up with the line on the outer face of the dial below the needle rest. I also drilled a small hole at the lowest point, when fitted, on the case so that any future ingress will drain quickly. I cannibalised an r45/65 speedo as the glass and odo wheels in mine had been damaged.

Good luck at fixing and cleaning yourself. I've always been scared of digging into one of these things. If you need to have it done I just got a /5 speedo/tach restored by North Hollywood Speedometer. It came back last week, beautiful work and it only took 2 weeks. JT

If I were not so poor from Air Head Sickness it would be off to the speedo shop. But I have spent all my money on Parts Parts and More parts. But it will all be worth it in the end!

Hey Todd, I stopped in the Honda shop today by the Compound. They had the Endurance computer for $79.00. $77.00 in the Aerostich catalog. It's got 18 functions. It might do for a while.

another cheap bastage

Not sure it means much, but I've been through two of those Endurance 'puters on my off-road bikes. They went sorta haywire after a while. Admittedly, they got a little rougher treatment than I'd expect on the GS.
I bet someone who can conquer a transmission would do fine with a speedo. Damnthing wasn't all that accurate to begin with, was it?

Talking It works

I cleaned and reassembled the Speedo using the products bellow and it works fine now. Getting the rust particles out of the magnetic input bell was the hardest part. I used the wd 40 to remove the water and contact cleaner and compressed air for the rest. The spray polish was used to remove the rust stains from the face plate.




The gasket was shot so i used clear silicone to blue the face back on,

if you don't wanna mess with the rubber nipple on the odometer reset, you can simply unscrew the plastic button. Then you can just cover the hole in the glass with black electrical tape and peel it back and reset it with your key each time.

I look forward to the resurfacing of this thread when your speedo breaks in another few months , and there is nothing any of us can do about it!

Seriously, I'm gonna measure that threaded thing tonight and draw up some plan for a support to take the stress of the nylon. Of course...as soon as I get that sorted out, the speedo will break again, or the needle will bounce, or more water will collect inside, or the speedo will fog up, etc...etc...
