Bent r100gspd frame (frame man questions)

My trusty old gs Needs to be straightened up. The frame has been bent since I bought it off of ebay in 04. It had a salvage title and the seller said every thing had been fixed. Well, when I sent tires to put on it so I could ride it from California back to Kentucky the seller emailed me and said it rode so much better with the new tires and that the vibration was gone (what vibration not mentioned in ad). I knew I was going to be in trouble. I flew out and made the 2500-mile trip home on the paint shaker with a bent front rim. I knew going in that, I would have to fix some things so I wasn't upset. I fixed everything except for the frame. I rode the UCC on it (11,600 miles in three weeks) in 05 and it has been sitting since. I purchased a new Ulysses. My dad wants to use the PD for his first ss1k so I need to make it safe. The neck is tweaked slightly to one side and the rear drive has to be cheated to the side to keep the drive shaft from rubbing the (NEW) housing. (can you say high speed wobble)

I know a lot of you have used the frame man. How much did it cost? Were you satisfied? Would you do it again?

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is the bike I intend on riding to panama in a couple of years. I have read up on the frame modification thread.

P.S.
Thanks for your time, I tried to search but it kept throwing the and man out as being too common of words.

You could also try GMD Computrack.

+1 on Computrack

My GS had the steering head tweaked and the main frame slightly bent. Cost me around $200. The cost will vary depending upon the amount of damage.
They also demonstrated to me the proper way to align the fork tubes by using the axle and not the top of the fork caps.

I was at a "fork" in the road...purchase a new frame or try to fix the one I had. I am completly satisfied with the work my local GMC Computrack did and would recommend them.

I was told to take the bike down to a rolling chassis. Basically the frame with the wheels & the engine attached. I also took off all the electrical wiring harness cables, battery tray etc. because I was going to weld on some "improvements." You might not need to take it down to the bare bone. Ask them when they call back.

I used the Frame Man to straighten my PD. I haven't had it back on the road, yet, so I can't comment to the workmanship yet. However, my driveshaft had the same symptoms yours has, and that has been fixed.

I stripped my bike down to just the main frame, subframe, bare engine, tranny, swingarm and final drive. I gave them the front end disassembled so they could check those components as well.

I honestly can't remember the cost. I'll have to dig up the reciept. What may be your deciding factor is shipping. I live near the Frame Man, so I just delivered it myself. If you have a GMD Computrack nearer to you, that might be the way to go.

At least with the GMD guys, you know there's some science to it. The Frame Man is very quiet about how he measures and adjusts the frames.

I hope to get mine on the road in a couple of weeks.....

I've used the frame man and they've been very good to me. I'd recommend them. If you're concerned about straightening a frame, don't be. BMW used to do that all the time. Usually new frames needed straightening after being welded together. I guess they even straightened frames owners brought them.

you did'nt say what year PD we're talking about, but a useful starting pricepoint pre-bending is what the factory fiche is saying for new: $1456 for a brand new frame unit. There are 2 diff frames listed in the fiche for the year split on PD's, both are similar price-- what the diff's are i don't know

Frame Man in Sac is well regarded and well-written about here. If it's a keeper bike and the diff b/t aligning and new is less than $500 i might be inclined to go for peace-of-mind new.

Good luck with it

As I recall, it was somewhere between $200 and $250. That was about three years ago.

I guess it would help it is a 1992. I have thought of ordering a new frame if fixing the old one exceeds half the cost of a new one I am waiting to hear from the computrack guys in Georgia to make my decision.

I just got off the phone with computrack. Kent seemed very knowledgeable and was happy to meet me on a Saturday to drop it off and pick it up. I guess I will be making a road trip to Atlanta next Saturday morning. Looking forward to riding above 70 mph on my GS. LOL

My GS is also a '92 so Kent will already have all the data needed for your bike.
Come by the shop when your in Atlanta www.bmwma.com and look around a little. I should have my GS there and you can see my "improvements."

I'm headed out in the morning to drop the old gs off in Atlanta. Moman I will try to get by the dealership when I come back to get it. I have to head over to S.C. to pick up a 29 model A sedan. It's going to be a long weekend.

I got my bike back together and am waiting like a little kid to get a chance to ride it. My dad completed the MTF-Ironbutt saddle sore out of Bowling Green KY Saturday. He ran 1050 miles in less than 18 hours. Not bad for the shape he is in after being broke up in several motorcycle wrecks when he was younger. It is great to see him riding again. He was happy to use my BMW but he is still a Harley man at heart. (On a side note I only own three bikes after he got his panhead back from me last week and I sold my KH in pieces on ebay. Now I only have to sell my 81 FLT so I will be back to a reasonable two and have some money to travel on.) He said the BMW rides excellent and that he ran it all day at speeds up to 85mph. The wobble is gone! Kent did an excellent job on it. Now I just need to get it back so I can play. It's my turn damit.
