SoCal wildflower viewing ideas?

I'm thinking about taking a few days to ride around central and southern California in March or April, and it occurred to me that thanks to the wet December we had (with more to come, hopefully) this might be a good year for wildflower blooms. I'm thinking Carrizo Plain, Antelope Valley Reserve, etc.

Those of you with local knowledge, what do you think? Good year for flowers or not? Any other good spots in the same general area, and/or on the way to Death Valley or Anza Borrego or Joshua Tree?

And would March/April be too late? I have to stay in SF the week of March 29 - April 4, but otherwise I could go anytime.

Definitely out in the desert off of (County Road) S-2 between the I-8 and the 78. There is a smallish window but very likely doable in March/April.

Post photos!

^^^ Yep, that's definitely one of the destinations I have in mind. The whole time I lived in LA, I never made it up there during poppy season... hoping to remedy that now.

Borrego springs, death valley, AV poppy reserve. Depending on where you are starting and how long you have.

Hi vaara,

I keep an eye on this site:
http://www.desertusa.com/wildflo/ca.html

And the "Wildflower Links" section on this website is helpful to me:
http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/prog/rec...ldflowers.html

Here's a cool "usual" chart of roughly when wildflowers bloom where:
http://www.blm.gov/style/medialib/bl..._times-508.pdf

It's been about five seasons since Carrizo had a good bloom ... the wildflower people are pretty fanatical about keeping in touch regarding good blooms ... I remember being shocked at all the folks on Bitterwater Road the last time there was a good bloom between Parkfield and Hwy 58 ...

In my (limited) experience the wildflowers move around a lot based on weather, how far south or north they are, and elevation, so the web is my friend as far as deciding where to head when to see them ...

The Hollister BLM Facebook page is calling for a good bloom this season ...

Hurricane Ridge, March, 2010 ...

see you around the campfire,
