MEXICO in JANUARY snow mud cattle guards

Well we decided to take a little ride over the boarder into warm and sunny old Mexico and take in the famous cooper canyon and what the hell rumor has it you can make it all the way their off road. Ah, what a grand idea, let’s go! But hay its January? So what were going south into warm and sunny Mexico right?

First Dan got some GPS way points from gaspipe and big dog after reading their ride report “A road less traveled” and that looked like a good place to start. So I drove out from Chicago and met up with John and Dan in Douglas Az. At the Gadsden Hotel. This hotel is an absolute must to stay at, great place and people. Although it is haunted and I can’t get the image of Poncho Via riding up the marble stairs out of my mind don’t miss it if you are ever down that way.

So here we are loading up the bikes behind the hotel.

After a slow cold start in the morning and a few last errands we made it through customs, insurance and the rest hiting the road at noon. “ Off like a heard of turtles”, about 2 seconds later we are through Agua Preta and are on a dusty trail headed south to warm sunny weather.

Ouch!!! Two hours later and the first screw up, it’s yours truly blowing it out on a curve bashing in my left pannier a few bruises but all is well.

In this photo I have carefully positioned my bike to show you how I mounted my I POD in the tank bag for ease of use while riding in rough terrain. Also note the water tight seal provided by wolfman bags.

Well it’s January and we don’t have that much light so we had better get to a place to stay for the night. The sun was setting and we were going through a lot of sandy washes and narrow canyons that seemed like something out of a Carlos Castaneda book. I am waiting for Don Juan C. to show up at any time but some asphalt and a hotel would be nice. We had all agreed before hand to no ridding at night but sometimes you got to do what you do. Ahh then a dim light ahead…
