I never have any problem with either sugar sand or muddy water at speed. I just give it more throttle. As I said, I stand 95% of the time, only sitting when riding black top and some dirt roads.

Hey!

Hopefully I am not to much off topic here. I need some help from 2001 EXC owners. I am doing a fork swap on my bike and since I won't be using a KTM wheel I need to know if the KTM front wheel axle from 2001 EXC 520 (part nr: 50309081200) is hollow or solid. The reason beeing, I would like to turn the thiner part of the axle down for 2mm to fit my wheel (from KTM 17mm to Kawasaki 15mm). I have been also searching on ebay for such axle to look at pictures but haven't found anything useful.

Thanks for help!

2001 EXC uses a 20mm axle.

It would be easier to make adapters for the fork bottoms to suit the correct 15mm axle. Thats what I do when I fit 17mm Duke wheels into 26mm KTM forks

Thanks for the info and correcting what I knew. Do you know what is the diameter of the thick part of the axle?? Still is the stock KTM axle solid or hollow?

I believe it is solid, at least on an '02 400EXC (20mm)/
What forks? I found out that '03 and above have a 26mm axle.
This might be confusing the issue but here ya go: http://ktmtalk.com/index.php?showtopic=479877

I have a set of WP43 forks off a 2001 620 SC SM, and the part numbers for the axles are the same for 2001 400/525 EXC, as the forks are the same, just diffrent springs. SM uses 5.0kg and EXC uses 4.2kg springs

should I go with "low hard" setting or a "low soft" setting.

I ride mostly rocky singletrack here in California. slow speed stuff with technical sections. but I like some fast desert riding too.

my friend that has a 525 said "low hard" so you don't lose the engine breaking but my other buddy that rides a 250 Yamaha said "low soft" cuz of the tight technical stuff.

what do you guys run?
Mine is kind of soft, but twist the throttle and it's power. Eventually you will have to fine tune with bearings anyway, so go with your gut.

Finally my XCW 525 is almost on the road! It's been way too long since I sold the MECA kit on it.

Nice set up ! I'm thinking of the same set up with the Kriegas for my Berg FE390.

Just did a 400mile day ride on my 520exc with my buddy who has a 525exc. Coming off a klr it sure is nice to actually have a bike that can go off road. We did pavement, fire roads, two track, single track, and these bike did it all with out a struggle!
