A Family Holiday in France

So how do you get yourself, your mother (who claims that at nearly 73 with replaced hips and knees that her pillion days are behind her), your bother, sister-in-law, the 2 nephews and your friend Tracy and 2 bikes over to France for a weeks family holiday?

We begin in my lounge,

move to my front garden, where this,

after a bit of grunting and a rubber mallet, soon becomes this

which is attached to that

and has this loaded on

followed by this

and we're not too far off ready!

An early start for the 90 mile drive down to Dover and a quick load onto the ferry for the 85 minute crossing to Calais. A quick spin round the fellow travellers, we have in the blue shirt my brother Colin, next to him our friend Tracy, opposite her my nephews Tyler (5) and Ethan (3) and my sister-in-law Shella.

Opposite me there's our mother, Doris

and most importantly, my breakfast.

As we were amongst the first people on board we finish breakfast and are up on deck, on a glorious morning, before we've even left port!

Sadly, the good weather doesn't stay with us to Calais

but with the bikes safely in the bowels of the ship we're ready for the 150 dawdle down to the département of Seine-Maratime in Haute-Normande.

Well, without giving away the plot, things don't go entirely smoothly with the trailer, but it does hopefully have a happy ending so:

It doesn't take long for the sun to come out and, apart from getting split up in the busy traffic around Le Touquet, we make good time without any real need to hurry (we aren't supposed to get to the gite before 4:00) so stop off at one of France's many roadside picnic spots for a leisurely break.

We arrived just on 4:00 and the usual round of unloading sorting out and rushing off to the supermarket to stock up for the next few days ensued before we got down to the important business of getting the barbecue going

and rocket launching.

With the tuna ready

we could at last relax

not least with our hosts locally produced calvados (apple brandy)

and our own invention, barbecued brie.

The plan is myself, Colin, Shella and, on the off chance we can drag her from her bed, occasionally Tracy go out for an early morning ride while Tyler and Ethan granny sit. We get back for a late breakfast / early lunch then go off and do family stuff for the afternoon.

The first day looks good,

very good,

very, very good,

as we take a run to nowhere in particular, just enjoying the morning sunshine and the empty roads.

We stopped off for a short break in St. Valery-en-Caux

before getting back on the road

and back to the gite.

We did 64 miles (it was Shella's first trip on the bike this year and she was aching), the gite is at Therouldville in the middle of the map and our route was clockwise.

So what to do with the rest of the day? Sitting with Diddier and Florence who own the gite and being plied with calvados, whiskey, camembert and chocolate cake, Diddier mentions there's 'Les 4 Heures de Valmont' on that afternoon, a démonstration de motos anciennes. Well, Valmont is the nearest 'big' town and it's just a couple of kilometers down the road so let's go see what's there.

What we had stumbled on was an afternoon motorbike show including 3 circuits of a local 5.5km course. So the fun began with, above, a 1953 Motoconfort U46C 125 (yes I got a programme so where I know what it is I'll tell you!) and below a 1953 Ariel 350NH.

1955 Peugeot TC4 176

1956 Motobécane Z56C 125

1956 Christophe 125

a Motobécane that, despite being numbered, wasn't in the programme
