Another valve adjust question....
I followed religiously Creeper's valve adjust thread. I checked and double checked my adjustments etc. Put the thing back together.........fired her up.........won't idle. I thought I may have moved the idle screw. Looked behind......exhaust is blowing black smoke
....not heaps but very noticable. Pulled it apart and the plug is black.Any ideas??? Cheers, Grant

Black smoke = excess fuel. Perhaps the enrichment cable/valve is stuck on. Stuck float or leaky needle & seat on carbs.

Unplug any wire connectors?
Spark plug cap all the way on the plug? Spark plug cap all the way on the high tension lead... nice and snug with a clean, funk free wire connection? (The cap "screws" on to the lead) Pinch any wires? Pinch the vacuum hose to the fuel pump? Pinch the fuel tank vent hose? All your petcocks open? Without more information, I'm running out of ideas..... |

Thanks for the reply Creeper. It runs perfectly when I am applying throttle but it just won't bloody idle. I turned the idle screw up and it idled but blows black smoke. The valves sound OK? I'm buggered if I know. I took the rocker covers off again and checked the valves and they seemed good. I have done my valves myself once before and all good. It also starts great. I checked and adjusted the valves whilst I had the the bike apart as I just replaced the starter clutch.
Maybe the choke is stuck on???? By the way........thanks for the "How to's" Creeper....absolutely fantastic. I have used the oil change and the valve adjust according to your instructions since I got my '03 in May last year. Thanks again, Grant

As to your problem, it might be something unrelated and coincidental... it happens, and when it does it makes us second guess everything we do. Going on the "rich condition at idle" theory... Has the bike been sitting for awhile? If it has, it could be a sticking float. Another possibility is a sticking or misadjusted enrichner... or possibly the cable is pulled out of the elbow. Have you done anything with the carb in the recent past... something that could show a symptom now? That's all I have at the moment that relates to what you've done... it will be interesting to find out what it acutally is. Best 'O luck, C |

Hi Grant,
I always look for the simplest solution (cause I'm simple ), so I'd guess that you've pinched or pulled something when refitting the tank.Try removing the tank and startingit up on the fuel left in the float / lines / pump and see if it runs fine. If it does, that confirms my hypothisis. If it still runs like shite, dig a little depper. If it is something pinched or pulled, causing it to run rich, I'd guess choke cable, Throttle cables (this could make it stall when cold, idle high when warm), especially if you have risers taller bars and / or a steering damper fitted. it could also be an issue with the manual decomp. cable too, maybe.

Hey Rhys,
I have just come in from the shed and about half a dozen..............bike runs just fine now....... I think it was the choke cable out of the elbow, but the spark plug laed not screwed tightly enough into the cap..........we will see when I take it for a ride tomorrow......Get ya suspenders back mate, MOuse and i missed you last weekend, Fantastic ride. Planning to do the same mid March.

The choke cable can be a bitch. I have my switch block moved in a bit as with my riser and bar set up it took up all the freeplay i the choke cable when the switch block was out next to the grip.
Yeah the suspension is all done all done, just got to go pick them up, hopefully Sat am. Better be brilliant now, cost $1300 ( had to get new seals, shock shaft rechromed, re sprung, revalved with new valving system in forks.)Got to work SAT and SUN afternoon so hopefully have it all back together by monday. Might not though as I am going to regrease all the bearings as well. I am going to be back at uni part time from next week onwards, but its only wednesday. As I normaly Work Fri, Sat and Sun and the occasional Thurs I'll be Keen for a few Watagans rides on Mondays and Tuesdays. VB stubbie is keen for a ride on the 26th of feb IIRC. I think he has a new Husky 610 now. Might go accross yengo to the 1/2 way house for lunch. Hmm, I might go start a thread on the ride now.Quote:
