Cheers and Good Luck
I don't see why there are issues grinding down the stock retainer. It only holds a worthless supposed vibration dampner band around the outer circumference that does nothing. The ground down retainer will still retain the stock size and any size sprocket exactly the same way. It's not like it is going to affect the re-sale or anything and grinding it down is a 5 minute job, even if it's not perfectly round, it won't harm anything. I used mine since new like this with numerous sprocket changes and simply use a bit of blue locktite on the retainer bolts without any issues ever.

Just saying...

Long shot, but does anyone have a clear/translucent safari tank they'd like to swap for a yellow one? I'll be riding around most of Aus later this year if there's anyone keen.

We already loctited the NSU screws. I have traced the entire NSU loom form CDI to bulb (which is OK) and I think the sender just flakes out when it gets hot. Tonight I am going to hotwire it, so it thinks its always in Neutral and see if the problem persists. If not then only course is to replace NSU.

Maybe a Carb service will help Kimmies hot starting.

I don't think Neutral system would effect it if the stand is up and the clutch is pulled.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the engine turns over on the starter then the safety cutouts would be working properly.
Tight gearbox when hot maybe oil type/viscosity or warped clutch plate dragging a bit.

It will not crank at all until it cools. press starter and nothing, no click even.

I did not try to bump start it, that may work if the bike just is inhibiting start.

Aparently with clutch in and sidestand up it wont crank either... But I was not there when she tried that.

OK so I disconnected the connections to the NSU and worked out what made it tick. The blue wire has to be at ground to light the neutral lamp. Then I warmed up the bike and it eventually flickered and went out and the engine stopped. Then I grounded the blue wire and everything fires up. So it works now, albeit the neutral light stays on. So a new NSU is probably the only solution, about $75.

My DR starts in gear as long as the side stand is up and clutch lever pulled in. Engine cuts out when side stand is pushed down while in gear(and neutral light off). A safety thing. I high sided off a TX500 years ago when the sidestand (left down) dug into the bitumen on a left turn.

Put in new float and rings and no more leak. Seems to be running a bit smoother to just by ear.

Cheers!

Did the tip of the float needle have a witness line?

Did you change the oil?

Derek

OK, so thats why she could ride when the lamp had gone out but it stopped when I warmed it up on the side stand (side stand was down). All our bikes stop if you engage gear when the stand is down, the DR is the only bike you have to pull clutch in to start in neutral on the stand.

Thanks all, I will let you know how replacing the NSU goes. Pity I have to rip the clutch out twice in a month...

To be honest I did not check the needle.

Oil change is happening this weekend.

Cheers Rob.

I consider that to be kind of risky.
