Trans America Trip: May 2013, need a riding partner!
Hey guys,
I've been watching the forum for some time, though this is one of my first posts. So hello to all! I'm doing the full Trans American Trail this coming May (2013), planning to leave on or around May 15. Right now I plan to do the trip solo, but would like to find someone to ride it with if possible! I'm an easy going, skilled, youngish (25) rider. Finding someone or a group to ride with along the same lines would be fantastic. I do plan to camp as much as possible to keep things cheap and don't mind long days in the saddle. If you're planning to be on the TAT around that time, please let me know. We can certainly work something out. I'd hate to have to ride the whole thing alone when I could have someone to share the experience with! Thanks, Austin |

From what I understand, CO will be "difficult" at that time of year. I've been planning for 2 years now and think I'll leave ~ AUG-SEP, giving myself 4 weeks and change. I'd love to do the eastern part in May, but need to do it in one swoop, not 2 legs.
I'm sure the guys who have BTDT will be along shortly, as well as the inmates who live in CO. |

I have a lot of confidence in Colorado / Utah. I've spent a lot of time in Colorado in May and June mountaineering. By June, when I plan on arriving in CO, most all of the snow will have melted off. I've also got a friend who did the CO-OR stretch of the trail at that time without a hitch and had a great time, so I don't feel too worried about it. Like you, i'm giving myself 4-6 weeks-ish.

Oh, I don't know if this helps interest anyone else. I'll also be filming the entire thing for a short, sponsored documentary.

Feel free to PM me closer to the time in CO. I live near Ophir Pass, so can get you snow condition updates. The snowpack is low this year currently so late may/early June shouldn't be a problem. A few years ago we got a LOT of snow in April and May, and Ophir didn't open until last week of June. Engineer/Cinnamon usually open at the same time, although it is a different county that plows them...at least the go around for these are pretty scenic as well!

Thanks, Mountainsandrivers... I will definitely be in touch closer to when I'm in Colorado. You're welcome to ride a few miles with me as well!

I'd love to ride this but I don't think my bike will be ready by then. I'm trying to convince one or two of my buddies that I'm not completely crazy and that they should buy some legal bikes and ride it with me. If I happen to be prepared in time I will hit you up and maybe tag along.
