powder coat??
I'm done with the tear down of my RZ 350 that I'm rebuilding (write up to follow in old school). It's currently down to the rolling chassis and it's time to start thinking about how I'm going to coat the frame once I strip the paint. I would like to powder coat it. Does anyone know aprox. how much it costs? Also do you normally use someone local?
I'm going to make a trip up to the local hot rod shop as well as the chopper place and ask where they get there stuff done but I would like to have some idea of what I'm talking about before I go. |

we have a local powder coater that has an oven big enough to do a full race car frame, we had some gates and such powder coated these were about 800.00 each. I would figure these to be about 4 times the size of a frame on a bike.

I'm rebuilding a neglected '97 DR650 and have been quoted $150 to powder coat the frame using standard colors they have on the shelf (custom would run extra). This includes grit blasting the frame to remove the old paint and any corrosion. Most powder coaters will (should!) blast the frame so you shouldn't have to strip the paint, I would get all the grease and oil off.
My Dad powder coated his '76 Goldwing frame for $200, but it is larger and heavier than the DR frame. For the cost, powder coating is well worth it. |

Yea, no more than 200 all in. Maybe you could have the blasting and the coating done in two different steps. Inform the shop that you want to weld some mounting tabs for something (then have an answer when they ask "What?") That is a "sounds like I know what I'm taking about" kind of reason Then you can inspect all the factory welds, and test fit different parts. Discover what you do, and do not, want powder coated. Bearing race bores, bushing bores, engine mount bolt holes, flats that other items fit between, etc. - Jim |

Powder coating is great. Some of them are difficult to keep clean, I did my wheels and they were hell to keep clean as oil seemed to stick really well. the only way to get it off was by using a wax. The other issue I have had is it is very hard to remove ! If you ever need to get back to the metal, say for a weld job, changing colour or any other reason, you will have to sand it off. No solvents or paint stripper will even touch it. Not even blasting, and forget that if it is aluminium below

Be sure to media-blast the surfaces to be powder coated....not just for paint removal but to give the PC a surface it can "grip" better. Also, check into having them put a clear coat over the color coat...looks nicer lasts longer. Friend of mine does this and a properly done powder coating with that clearcoat (like on a set of ATV a arms) you can smack it with a ball peen hammer and it doesn't chip or flake.

I just dropped off a BMW airhead frame, a subframe, a swingarm and two aluminum wheels and the guy told me it should come in a around $400 to $425
the old BMW airhead "snowflake" wheels used tubes I am told I can go tubeless after powdercoating which is a completely useless piece of information for you but it makes me happy

here in seattle
I got a guzzi loopframe, forks, toolboxes, battery box and a box of misc bits done for 250.00. This included soda blasting and chasing the threads after the fact.

Yeah, I woulds guess about 200-250 for that frame....
The powdercoat folks should be doing the blasting as well, the guy I use does. Another consideration is "No paint (or coat) areas" ... the threads and bosses that should not be coated are very important. I have never had my RZ down to a bare frame so I cannot comment on which areas to protect but keep it in mind. I usually have a good consultation with he fellow I use and we do the mark up before I go and it all works out well. He is very used to the Guzzi frames I do mostly anyway.... Nice, looking forward to a good report... are you going through the engine as well...? Go YPVS.... ! Best, Rob

I'll ask a couple of guys on the Guzzi board that are in PA where they get their stuff done. Where in SE PA...? Stroudsburg area by chance...? I think I'll send the RZ engine to RZ's Unlimited when it comes time to do mine.... http://www.rzsunlimited.com prolly just send them the bottom and have the seals and crank bearings done, I really do not want to become a two stroke expert.... plus, I want it to be done right..! Best, Rob
