That’s funny; I never thought of trout as “bait-sized” fishing but I guess it is at times.
I’ve fished the Firehole, Madison, Gallatin and a few tributaries that flow into the Madison. Montana and Idaho are my favorite states to fish. The Yak is a frustrating experience and not overly dense with trout so I don’t really fish it much anymore. Another couple of great stretchs of water in Ketchum are the Big Wood and the Big Lost rivers. However, Silver Creek is still my fave, especially at dusk. I once watched a guy hook a small rainbow at Silver Creek that a big brown then chomped on…it was a 2-fer and he didn’t know it until he landed the brown and out popped the rainbow. Hilarious! ![]() Yep, strap it to the bike; that's how I'm going. |

Interested in flyfishing with you FFs.
I've carried many rods on my GS over the years. And I've gotten a lot less picky about the rods. I started with a three piece Sage LL and I've dumbed down to a Cabelas 7 piece Sto-away....cheap and relatively disposable. It fits in the saddlebag or strapped to my other gear bags on the rear rack. I'm looking to hit some Oregon and South central washington waters this summer. Cheers, Jorge

I am a strap it on guy. Across the bars worked great on the F650. I place it somewhere on the rear on the larger GSs.
I have two rods. As luck would have it my 3 piece is the one that I like to use. It packs longer than my 4 piece. The only issues that I have are that the tube tends to mark up the bike. But that is a small price to pay. Good fishing.

Should we plan a ride to get some fly fishing in this season?
Eastern Oregon, Eastern Washington, Idaho, Montana? ![]() Let's get it in the books! Maybe some of you could meet up at your own pace with me in Sun Valley (June 20 to 26) and we'll give the Big Wood, the Big Lost, and Silver Creek a run for their money?!

Travel Rods
Yo I am also a fly fisher, thinking of the same problem and I think that for sure my 2 peice temple fork rod is gonna be a problem, I was looking into some travel rods from LL bean.
Here is the link. Should be small enough to strap anywhere on the bike. My 4 piece wont be a good one either the tube is over 2' and I dont want to deal with that. http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/sto...p&feat=4375-tn |

I've never tried fly fishing but if you make it through central Oregon try out the Metolius River by Sisters/Camp Sherman. People rave about it and I'm always amazed at the different magazines it makes it in.
Fall River is another popular fly fishing destination although there was the incident of a retardant plane dropping a load in it a few years ago...

How about we start a list of potential locations to fish and see what people have to contribute or think about them.
- Rocky Ford, 22 miles north of Moses Lake. Great spring creek type fishing close to Soap Lake, the http://www.notaraslodge.com/ and Don's restaurant for steaks and prime rib. Fishing "the ditch" is the closest thing we have to Silver Creek. - The Yakima. There's wall tent lodging in the canyon. http://www.brazdasflyfishing.com/yak...camp-trout.htm you don't have to have a guided trip to stay there. I think Red's has wall tents as well. - Little Deschutes or The Tilton River in Morton for day trips. The Lil Deschutes is open now, Tilton I think May 26. - Sea Run Cutts at Point No Point, Purdy Spit, Narrows Park, Olalla, etc. Any other ideas, chime in.......... |

I've carried my 4 pc Powell rod easily on a cycle. My kid slammed a car door on it last year and the tip is gone, have to take care of that.

The one problem for me is that most of my best days on the water have been spent out-of-state with
I’m not a boat guy. I prefer to wade for the full experience. I may not catch as many fish as someone in a boat covering more water but I still manage to have a great, relaxing time. Okay, here goes…in order of distance from Close: Yakima River – Easy access, lots of water, and decent camping options. Close to food and services, too. Pretty Close: Chewuch & Methow Rivers – Near Easy access, lots of water, and decent camping options. Close to food and services, too. Pretty Far: Little Another great river that’s back in shape and fishing well. Easy access, lots of water, and decent camping options. Close to food and services, too. Closer than Silver Creek. Very Far: Silver Creek – My personal favorite! A real test of patience and presentation. Easy access, lots of water, and decent camping options. Close to food and services, too. It’s a bit of a haul but well worth it! Click HERE for travel plans!

A cardboard tube and duct tape works...
As pictured below (hopefully)... a cloth handkerchief keeps it from bouncing around too much. Caught a few trout and some big squawfish on this trip.
This was in CA, above Pine Flat Lake... have since moved back home to Tacoma.. BTW... Can take you to a couple of cutthroat areas... Chambers Creek (Stream), Gig Harbor (Sound)... that are fun to fish if you ever make it to the west side. |
