That does sound like a failure inside the keyswitch when the instruments goes wonky... Also check the wire cluster that are ziptied to the fairing/dash support brace and see if any of the underside wires have rubbed raw and are shorting against the brace... Electrical stuff sucks....

A poor battery does cause all kind of grief with the whole system, I tried to milk a few extra months out of one years back and it made the bike very quirky to start, even with the kicker... When I finally replaced the battery I also had to replace the starter clutch as a related issue... What happened is the weak battery did not engage the starter with enough force to spin the sprague into a good bite on the drum... So the sprague would slip a bit with each start with the weak battery... By the time I put a fresh battery in the sprague was so marred up that it would not hold the drum with the extra gusto from the new battery and just made that horrible slipping squeel...

Guys,
Just did my keyswitch, can't say I enjoyed it at all.

Hard to get apart, hard to get off(needed a short Phillips to remove and a couple of small screw drivers to release the tangs).
It was dirty inside, my wiring was solid.

It was worth doing as my ignition would cut off every so often at speed.

That was a bad feeling.

Of course the dash light didn't work either.

I put my new Shorai in, turned the key on... nuthin'

Check the power socket on the dash which feeds straight from the battery via a fuse, 0 Volts. Bugger.

Check the battery terminals, 13.2V. Hmmm

Check the fuse box (terminals are exposed on the underside) input from battery, 0V. Ok, there's only 100mm of wire left to check! Yup, the main feed from the battery had broken at the battery terminal crimp shared with the starter feed. Pulling the rubber boot back has finally and fully separated the wire. Crimp on a new ring and we are away!

The old battery was 12.84V so not completely dead, but well below par. Most likely was the broken wire causing me grief, but I am certainly not begrudging that 7.5 year old battery anything, or the new Shorai which was available locally for 63% of the price of an Odyssey.

Good on you Colin....
You dodged a bullet not having to go at the ignition switch.

Wish you would come over and touch my battery. I rarely get 12.8V, usually less with everyday running.

Thumb Battery tenders are awesome!!

Guys keeping your batteries on a tender when not riding them can save you a ton of problems, cash, and frustration. All my bikes stay on tenders when not being ridden...my 04 busa and 06 zx14 are still on the original batteries, and I get 8+ years of solid starting out of a battery before its time to replace on the other bikes.
Have never had a starter or other electrical problem/quirk yet on these bikes, and they fire up instantly even after sitting all winter.

Its amazing how much better your bike can behave with a well charged battery

+1 on good battery tenders.

My boat batteries are going on ten years old and the four year old Yuasa that came in my LC4E is still going strong. Guess what they all have in common......
