Wheels that fit R80RT???

I really like spokes and don't care for the mags on my '85 R80RT. Any suggestions on what will fit? My front is dinged which helps in my decision to change. Will any airhead, drum, 4-bolt GS wheel fit the rear? I'm riding the fence between building a mild GS or a wild Cafe'. That makes the wheel decision a little more critical although the wheels I find could determine the direction I go. Thanks for any suggestions. Here's a before shot I took last week.

Maybe I should retitle this "What wheel will fit the rear of my R80RT?" The front end with the really wierd split calipers will be gone either way so the front won't matter. Just sayin'.

Find a Big Sissy Bar for it Trout! That rascal cleaned up pretty good, man. You should bring that thing down to the Compound one day, and we'll swap some wheels around and see what fits and does'nt fit. We have a few to try on it. Have you done anything with the motor yet? Does it run?

I just noticed that bike has no carbs.

What did it look like when you started?

Carbs are being cleaned. Bike was dirty and tank and carbs had enough varnish to coat a houseful of furniture. Sitting for a year is hell on an airhead. Such is life.

If an R100GS rear wheel doesn't fit, then there isn't a spoke wheel anywhere that will.

Somebody has to make a hub with brake drum that matches your differential. And, of course uses lug bolts to hold the wheel on. That's not a trivial thing that Joe's Aftermarket Supply can whip right up. Even if they did, they'd only sell three.

Stick with your OE wheels.

Hey Man, Todd has an extra set of GS Wheels @ the Compound. Why not pick 1 or both up and try them on your bike!

Pssst: I did'nt say anything about any wheels, OK!

here's what should fit,,,,

from the looks of it R100 G/S wire wheels should work,,,there's a myriad of ways available today to create quite a few scenarios,,,all of course limited by the clearance of your fender ,frame forks,,swingarm....tell me what you are trying to achieve and i could help you get there,,,,

so the trick is coming up with a set of usable hubs,,,,best bet is to get ones that have spun bearings,,,,they are considered junk and only worth the price of aluminum,,,but to me they are still usable,,,just converted 3 sets of these to sealed ball bearings in the last week or two,,,,we may need to modify offset,,,,but the drum diameter,,,4 hole bolt pattern are fairly universalfor those years

Here is a pic of my brothers R80(ex)RT. On his Monolever we installed a K75 fork, 4-pot Brembo calipers and R100R wheels.

The diameter of the front axle is the same on the Monolever airheads, K75 and R100R and GS.
So the front wheel of the R100R is almost a drop in replacement. It might be that you have to play
with the spacers in order to center the front wheel. There are also spacers for the brake discs available.

On my brothers bike we used the spacers from the GS.

Fitting the rear wheel is a bit more complicated. Here you can see a R100R and a Monolever rear wheel side by side.
As you can see the stub in the center of the hub is much higher on th R100R wheel.

Here I have just placed a Monolever rear drive on the R100R wheel:

In order to close the gap, around 21mm were milled of the R100R stub.
My brother wanted to install a 130mm wide rear tire on the bike, but the tire touched the swing arm.
As a result he had the wheel laced 10mm to the left.

On a german forum somebody wrote that it is also possible to install the final drive cover of the R100GS
in order to close the gap between hub and final drive.
This way the hub doesn't have to be milled of. But with this I have no personal experience...

Regards

Bernd

Interesting that you have a four bolt pattern rather than three, like the ST or G/S. Learn new stuff every day. These bikes are like tinker toys except not all the pieces quite fit. Looks are sometimes deceiving.

No doodoo Woody. We love you. As long as there's just information/experience and not, "send it to me and for a grand or two I can fix it", you're in the clear.

Thanks very much for the info and pics! Much more info than I thought I'd get.
