Nice choice of bike too!

Hi blackbirdzach,

We looked for the Lava for a long time. Many tourist were coming back with out luck of seeing the lava. Finally at dusk, we could see the glowing lava. The lava was hard to find in the daylight, but would glow as the sun started to set.

Reminder, check with the National Park Service about viewing the lava. Many times you are not allowed to walk up to the lava flows because of safety.

We went to Hawaii just over one year ago. As of this writing Spring, 2007 the area was closed. The NPS site states "Currently, there are NO surface lava flows that visitors can walk up to" Here is the Volcanoes NPS Website: Volcanoes National Park

Kona Leeward (West)is the dry side, Hilo Windward (East) is the wet side of the Big Island. We had the weather gods on our side, as we had perfect weather for all 21 days.

Great pictures so far. Me and my girl are planning a trip at the end of this summer. If she gets a job there, we might be moving.

Nice pic's ! Wife and I did the Big Island 6 years ago, Rented a Ford Explorer and lived out of the back for 10 days. Drove 775 miles (yes, its a big island) Did you ride to the bottom of Wiapio valley? - thats a steep road to drive up! Sat and watched the sunset on Mauna Kea, then watched the stars come out. (Way cool!)
