New Zealand - The Dusty Butt 1000km Rally 2010

I recently attended the Dusty Butt 1000km Rally in the south island of NZ.
More info about the ride here
Basically a 1 or 2 day ride around a very well mapped out course with plenty of amazing views, river crossings and more gates than any man should have to endure, a fantastic way to spend a weekend.

Between the near constant riding I managed to snap a few pictures along the way. Please enjoy.

This was heading over the Mackenzie Pass just outside of Fairlie (about 30mins into the ride)

Looks awesome Chris. Dry dry & dry - apart from the creek crossing.

Hi Jonkko - I'll attempt an answer and others can leap in - this ride was organised by an enthusiast CooneyR (also on this site) - it is an informal non commercial event organised by enthusiasts for enthusiasts.

Whilst we use a 'Corner man' system here in NZ, in this instance people had either route sheets / roll charts with course directions or used a GPS.

As to fuel - on the 2 day event people either had large capacity tanks or carried extra fuel with them.

Others, CooneyR, comments - cheers Aslan

Indeed, this is not an IBA sanctioned ride, never even heard of them until well into our second year.
It's also only 1000km not 1000miles, but it's practically all hills and corners.
It's as much about scenery as the socialising and/or the riding itself.

It would be quite interesting however to have someone who's in to the IBA rides over there to be interested enough to come over hear, talk shit and ride with us. I'd be curious to hear what they thought of our little ride afterward, but I suspect it would be comparing apples with oranges.

Cheers
TA.

jonkko, this ride although in the IBA spirit, is not formally documented.

For the locals not familiar with the IBA rules: anyone can do the rides on a route of their choice at any time and submit documented evidence. This usually means computerised fuel receipts showing time & location, especially on the corners (ie points of a star) to show when & where you went, and that you did not take shortcuts. That's what jonkko was asking about; and similarly why the GC usually has checkpoints on the major extremeties of the route.

Basically this ride grew from my experiences riding the local equivalent of the IBA SS1000, The Grand Challenge. Several of us adv'ers thought we should do an adventure version, thus the Dusty Butt 1000km was born largely due to cooneyr's dedication to the cause. We felt 1600km of adventure was too much for ppl who hadn't done the 1600km road rides (most hadn't). Indeed it takes as long to do 1000km of adventure as 1600km on-road, and I found the adventure route more tiring so I think the distance was a good call. We found out later the IBA also has a DB, but it is an obvious name choice, eh? Interesting that the organisers of the GC had also tried 1000 mile adventure rides 20 years ago!! but they weren't popular enough to continue: Double Happy Rallys.
