Southern Europe Offroad trip

Between early July and End August, Iím doing a loop of the Mediterranean from 3 to 9 oíclock.

Iím riding my BMW X Challenge with soft luggage to northern Greece via the slab and then heading north through the Balkan region via Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Croatia, then slab across northern Italy/ southern France (probably fitting in some of the tracks on the Italy/France border, possibly Corsica, but less likely), then the length of the Pyrenees, northern Spain and the length of Portugal.

Iíll leave the bike in S Spain in preparation for a Christmas Morocco visit.

Iím looking for as much dirt as possible.

The very approximate timeline is

  • Early/mid/late July: Balkans
  • Late July/early Aug: Alps
  • Early/Mid Aug: Pyrenees
  • Mid/Late August: N Spain and Portugal

Mainly camping or cheap hotels/pensions.

Anyone doing anything similar or live in the area and want to drink a beer?

Hope no offence is taken if I say Iím teaming up with a mate for the Pyrenees already, but always like riding with one or two people in interesting/ off-pavement areas. Iíll drink a beer in the evening with anyone, but wasnít intending on helping to man-handle a noviceís big rig or lead somebody around who canít be bothered to navigate themselves = Letís call it a partnership of equals.

Are you in the same place at the same time as me?

Drop me a line via PM or an email via my website.

Have a great summer.

A little update:

I'm now going to ride transit across Germany/Austria/Hungary (3 x 600plus km days on a thumper... ouch! ) to western Romania in order to ride a bit of dirt between Brebu Nou (Enduromania HQ) and Brasov. After that to Bulgaria for a (hopefully quick) bit of business, then to Albania to pick up my Balkan trail northwards as described in post #1.

Hi Chris

I live in San Sebastian. I have ridden the Pyrenees several times, but offroad not so frequently. I ride a Vstrom 650 and I have some hours on dirt tracks (I have ridden the dirt tracks of the gorges of dades and todra, and the high atlas in morocco, with street tyres). I have ridden the last part of the Pyrenees Smugglers' track (from Tor to Andorra). I am interested in doing the whole smugglers' track, from Montferrer to Tor and Andorra (about 80-100 kms of dirt track riding from 600 to 2200 meters high).

As I am tripping with my wife to the Provenza from 15th August,I am gonna ride the track the 9th or 10th. at first, I will do it solo riding, but much better in company, because there are at least four river-crossing, although in august they will not be too much difficult to pass.

the last part of the smugglers' track is this, done in June last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_eiIVCLjGY

If we approach dates, we could meet. My idea is to start from Montferrer (just beside La Seu d'Urgell) and do the track uphill again. I'll keep an eye on this thread, just in case you were interested in sharing this 80-100 kms dirt track. I prefer to do it escorted, much more sure than solo riding, although I am crazy enough to do it alone,

regards, and enjoy your route.

Andorra and the smuggler's route isn't on the itinerary, but plans can change. Look out for 2 blue/white x-challenges, one with a fully rallye fairing (my mate's) and one without (mine).

There's certainly a chance of that. I'll be in the Balkan region at about the same time as you're heading north. Look out for a blue/white X Challenge with black soft panniers and a red kitbag on the pillion seat.

Hi,

I'm based near La Pobla de Segur through most of August and into September. The location is in the Pyrenees, near the frontier between Catalonia and Aragon where I organise off road ralies.

I'd gladly share a beer, ride some trails and generally chill out.

I'm at a camping but can recommend some good cheap hotels if that's what you want but in high season, i.e. August, these can be full.

See my blog for lost of stuff on riding in Spain, including some clarification on the complicated trail regulations here

Regs

Simon

Tonight (16July) I'm in Berat
Thur: Peshkopi
Fri: Kukes

Internet is a bit patchy in Albania, so if relevant, an SMS to +44 7 eight one 2 941 eight six 7 probably best.

Hi Chris, You should try to hit the backside of lake Skadar, along the coast of the lake to reach small town of Rijeka Crnojevica, and from there You can reach the coast.
And grab a ride to the top of the Njegos mausoleum and ride down to the Kotor, it's beautiful twisty road that goes from sea level to the top of the mountain some 1600 + m above the sea level.

ride on and keep us informed

Thanks for this info guys.

The bike now has a shiny new front brake line off a wr450 from the Podgorica Yamaha dealer. It'll be great to have 2 working brakes again!

Back up into the hills. Will fit in a rest day tomorrow. Likely to cross into Bosnia on Thursday.
