Closing the Pub at Marree

Now that I've got your attention, let me say that what we actually did was stay there until closing time.
I left with Barneyrubble and a non ADV mate Ringo on Friday morning.
Tar to Kapunda, then up Taylors Run Road, Powerline Road to Manoora, then Mintaro, Mount Rufus Road, Hilltown, Andrews then the Belailie Valley throught to past Jamestown, turn left over main road to Tarcowie then to Willowie, Wilmington and up the Old Gunyah Road to overnight at Quorn.
Saturday Arden Vale Road to Simmonstown, then north to Hookina and back onto the tar. Lyndhurst via old Beltana, then onto Marree.
Sunday straight back to Parachilna, up to Blinman (where they were having the food and wine affair), down the Wilpena Road, west on Brachina, up Bunyeroo to Razorback then back down, Brachina to the main drag then down to Morolana.
By now it's 4pm; eyes out on stalks looking for relatives of Masterbrewer's kanagrooted; saw plenty, and chooks as well but missed all of them.
Sunday back to Mintaro roughly the same track, then west of the Main North Road via Hoyleton, Salter Springs to pop out at Roseworth Ag college.
1,550 kms without hitting anything and only one member of the crew forgot to take his sunnies off whilst desparately tearing his helmet off to get rid of something (he says) he ate at breakfast.
Apparently he got the helmet off with a millisecond to spare.

Got to Mintaro, the pub was closed and the sign said "Closed due to circumstances. Will open shortly". What sort of circumstances? Unforseen; expected; random? Nope, nothing, just circumstances

Hugh Proby's Grave

Marree Pub, after the AFL Grand Final; locals were on fire:

Terrorists invade Blinman; we passed about 50 cars on the Parachilna Gorge Road.

Mount Rufus Road near Mintaro: Best background in the world to photograph your bike.

Just have to say, we stayed upstairs in the Marree pub; $70 per single room; very clean. Evening meal was great. Phil Tucker and his wife Maz have had the pub about 10 months and are re-establishing it as a local hotel; not simply a gray nomad stopping place (not that there's anything wrong with that Trev). They are fantastic hosts. I cannot recommend the pub too highly as either a destination or a stop over.

Cheers
Tim

Hi Kipo, someone called Eileen Edwards or something similar. Died in about 1999. I assume she may have been one of the more recent owners of the station (but I'm sure you'll set me straight).
The two lads with me on this trip are both UK imports, and the story of Proby's death so far from his birthplace had a particular resonance for them.

If only I could have actually faced something to eat at breakfast. It felt like I was trying to recreate a scene from the Exorcist. Although once I had expelled the remainder of the Coopers demon I felt much better.

Top ride over a great weekend.

Ride this Friday 5th Oct?

Have been back from the Flinders for a couple of weeks, stll on holidays for a little while but got caught up helping out with a family situation and now have clear air in front of me.

Anyone feel like a cruisy day out this Friday? Not sure where I'd go but maybe from Gawler up through Taylors Run Rd up to Burra (ish).

Just to please Kipo, there's a nice little bakery at Burra.

Correct, Amy Williams, (no relative) I tried to find out who she was but I've had no luck. The Mayor didn't know either unless he's found out since.

Ahh bummer...if it was Sunday.....I'd be in. Just bought an 08 950 super from over by dubbo last weekend, rode it back on the road and this weekend was hoping to get out for a 'less bitumen' ride, but with school hols on I am stuck with the boy till Saturday afternoon and he's not quite old enough to be on the back yet .....only a couple of months though...

As Andy would say, "Lifestyle Trev, lifestyle"

And the best place to eat at Burra is the 'Cook -A- Burra" I had the best hamburger with the lot coming home from the Gawler Road Trial earlier this year.

Internet talks about him wanting to bury her there because of her love of the Flinders.

Bugga. I'm sure you'll find reasons to ride it sometime. I have a full weekend, so just taking off for one day to get some sun and air.

Yeh, been there a couple of times. PBee is a devotee and likes the Kiwi who runs it. I like the pasties from around the corner but might be tempted for a plate of delights from the Kiwi. cheers
