Lewis county has published some of their trail maps on the web ... http://www.lewiscountychamber.org/atv_maps.php

The northern loop on the attached track is covered on the Croghan map and the most interesting part of this track. There are a number of truck trails there and the state has purchased some easements. Hopefully they will keep it open.

A few pics at http://picasaweb.google.com/grantville/Harrisville ....

Browns Tract road between Raquette Lake and Eagle Bay is a nice detour, mostly dirt, off of 28 for those headed that way.

The Indian is near the Raquette Lake end...

Thanks Conibear. I didn't know about that one. I'll have to check it out come spring. Would be nice if you could make a loop from there down thru Moose River Plains but the state doesn't want us outlaw bikers there!
For those of you who are not familiar with Moose River Plains recreation area, it's a huge piece of state land with a 23 mile dirt road that runs through it between Indian Lake and Inlet. Even though it is a maintained road, motorcycles are not allowed! I always wondered why, and even if it's legal to ban two wheeled vehicles from a public roadway. This fall I was there camping and talked to a very cool ranger. He said that when the state took over the area in the 60's there were big problems in Old Forge and Inlet with "Biker Gangs" "Hells Angels" so they banned all motorcycles to keep the area free of them. He thought they kept the rule in place now to keep out dual sport riders from riding off the road where they shouldn't be. He's a fairly young guy that grew up in the area. He said he suggested when he was a newbie ranger that since the area is supposed to be a "recreation area" that there should be a section for ATV's to use. Provide a place for them to ride so they don't ride where they shouldn't be. Well, you can imagine how that went over! They (Albany) are working on a "plan" for the area. Some want to close down the road to motor vehicle traffic all together. He said some dignitaries came up from Albany to check the area out last summer. He noted "They didn't walk in, they drove".

Rant over.....

Tony

Tony
I wrote all my state representatives about the subject last summer, but I missed the period for public comment on the proposed final UMP for the Moose River Plains. I did get this reply from my assemblyman:

Dear Bill:

Thank you for your recent e-mail regarding DEC regulations
which exclude motorcycles from the Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Road. I
appreciate you writing and keeping me informed of your concerns.

Originally put into effect during the 1970's; the original intent of 6
NYCRR Part 196.3 (c) was to prevent organized motorcycle gangs from
congregating on the roads in the forest preserved in unsupervised
areas. As part of the Draft Unit Management Plan, it has been
recommended that this provision be removed and that motorcycles be
allowed to travel on the Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Road. The Draft Unit
Management Plan has been out for public comment and DEC is in the
process of making adaptations per the public comment and hopes to
provide it to the Adirondacks Park Agency for approval by the end of the
summer. While it uncertain when final regulations will be made and take
effect, the concerns surrounding this issue have been voiced and the
Department recognizes the need for adaptation.

If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

David R. Townsend
Member of Assembly

Given the politics of this state it is hard to say how it will end up, but the general trend as been towards increasing restrictions and limiting access.

I have talked to a few rangers and state employees myself, and have yet to find one who thought the motorcycle restriction made sense in this day and age.

Cool, thanks Conibear for that info. I noticed that your link to the map came from a www.Foresport web address. Are you from that area? Some great dirt roads for exploring out that way. This pic was taken outside the Buffalo Head Restuarant during a dualsport ride lunch break.

That's Forestports most famous landmark! Nice to see all those dual sports there. I live just up the road a-ways.

Yes there are some good dirt roads around there and we aren't too far from the Tug Hill area - probably the best dual sport riding in the state.

Eh? What's that?

This just in: conibear's offering guided DS tours of the ADKs this spring.

Excellent!

Seriously, it would be cool to get a nice day trip together. Does anything usually happen in the DS world for Americade?

Here is a nice detour off of Rt 30 just north of Speculator. I don't think I saved my track file but I will check when I get home. It is called the Perkins Clearing Road. The north end goes around Mason Lake.

I am pretty much ALWAYS up for a ride Can't wait till spring. Max BMW had some off road demo rides last year at Americade. If you signed up officially for the whole week I guess there was a dual sport ride map available.

I'm hosting a Moto Movie night Friday Feb 1 if any of you local guys wanna stop by PM me for details.

Tony

Edited: Friday is the 1st not the 2nd! duh

There are a few dirt/4x4 roads that span between Stony Creek and the Northville area, I have yet to check them out, anyone interested in a ride in the near future?

Map of the area
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=...ad83&layer=DRG

If your in the Saratoga area, Lake Desolation Rd in Greenfield is great fun, mix of dirt and tarmac over the Kayderosseras Range. The Kayderosseras is littered with trails and dirt roads, it's mostly private/leased property so discression is advised as well as knobby tires as it tends to get muddy in areas.

Cheers,
Jethro

I was through the Cedar River-Limekiln Lake road last year.

I passed through there a few years back in my Jeep and thought it would be a good road on the bike.
Who would of thought it would be illegal on a motorcycle but not in a Jeep?
A few miles in I got stopped by a ranger asking if I read the sign on the way in.
I sheepishly asked "the one that said 15 mph?"
"No the one that said no motorcycles."
"Not even street legal ones?"
No motorcycles period
He was really cool about it,said he dual-sported too and was trying to get the rule changed.
He also said your more than 1/2 through so you might as well keep going

What a shame we are being discriminated against once again in New York.
We pay for a ATV plate for years and still nowhere to legally ride.
Talk about taxation without representation
Now being kept off because you have 2 wheels instead of 4??
What can we do...

Loop containing Brown's Tract and Limekiln - Cedar River road, with a little detour over to the Chimney Mountain trailhead.

My experiences were similiar to enduro0125's. I think September is probably the quietest time there, after the summer tourists and before hunting season.

Both times I've rode through there I've seen moose tracks - the Moose River Plains lives up to its name! It really is a nice ride.

Larger 2 day loop. I think the interesting parts are at South Creek lake, which looked like it would be a good place to camp for the night, and along Tooley Pond Road. Tooley Pond road is paved but it was a nice ride along the Grass River and had a nice view of Nelson Falls. I didn't see any other people or vehicles until I got to south end where there were a few camps.

Nelson Falls
