French and Swiss Alps, August 06

I visited western part of European Alps that belongs to France and some Swiss Alps I've not been yet except Furka pass where I was several times. I was riding with 3 English friends, Simon, Mark and Ian.

I started from my home (near Frankfurt/Germany) towards Troyes (France) on Saturday 19.09.2006. It was a nice, calm ride, 500 km long, nice, sunny weather all the time. Somewhere in Germany:

English riders are very late (22:30). I was there earlier (18 hours) and have almost fell asleep waiting for them. We continued our ride towards Grenoble, but because of rain and changed route, we reached only some small town in France, some 60 km north-west from Grenoble. The grapes from this vineyards is the source of probably the world's best wines:

Next day start towards Grenoble:

I didn't know that Alpe d'Huez is actually a mountain pass. With the help of the GPS, we have found a narrow paved road that descents on the other side to a small mountain village. BTW, d'Huez is famous for world's biggest cycling race Tour d' France:

View vrom the pass:

Narrow road on the other side:

And view from this road:

Col d'Izoard:

Simon and Ian resting:

Mountains we've just rode over:

Finally, the highest paved road in Europe: Col de la Bonette, 2802 m:

We did a lot of passes later, but I had a chance to make a few photos only from Col d'Allos:

Next day:

Col d'Izoard again, on the way to Galibier pass:

And then Galibier. One of the most beautiful passes I've seen so far:

On the end of the day, while climbing to Galibier from the other side, I was unfortunate not to spot a gravel on the road, and I fell :( Luckily, bike was not damaged a lot, and I was not hurt too much so I could continue my trip.

Video clip is here.

Some beautiful moments at the end of the day:

We turned towards East. Just crossed French/Italian border. We were crossing borders between this two countries several times later, but since both countries are in EU, borders are wide open.

Climbing to, IMHO, the most dramatic pass we've seen so far, Col d'Iseran:

View to Val d'Isere:

On the way to Italy again, towards the mountains that are in the same group as EU highest peak: Mt.Blanc:

Switzerland, no destination, just ride. We were climbing to dams that collects water from melted glaciers. This artificial lakes were higher then 2000 m :

We even did a few stretches on unpaved narrow roads:

The last day in Alps. We've sleeping in sweet wuden house at 1700 m. Morning was cold, temperature was -3 C:

We went to Zermatt to see Matterhorn. There were some very unpleasant people. Did a few photos and escaped:

Furkapass:

Oberalppass:

And the last, Splungen pass:

Next stop was near Freiburg in Germany. Then we rode to my home where we took a nice dinner which was the end of our journey for me. My friends did a long and boring ride to their homes in Englad on the next day.

Although I fell, this was the greatest ride in Alps until now.
