Black Hills gathering - May 24-27
Well, its time to get the details set on the Black Hills trip this year.
Last fall I sent out a PM to a few people that I thought may be interested in going out to the Hills. Quote:
So, some of ya know about this and some don't. If your intersted in going, let me know, I'll update the list. Probable: 1. rokklym 2. Hayduke 3. kbikeboy 4. katbeanz 5. Tomc 6. flyingbeard 7. dieseltwin 8. levine98 9. DakotaDon maybe: governor restorationwerks RubysDaddy Not likely: critic Out: KTM300 craig6785 Benp1981 My plan is to stay at the Black Fox CG, which is free, but that depends on how many people end up going out there. I'll be out there early, so I'll say if the campground can't accomodate us, we'll make other plans, lotsa campgrounds out there. Here is the ride report from last year: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...ight=paha+sapa I'd like to get a plan set up, see who is riding out and who is hauling out too.

Hiya Chad. I'm still planning on riding up from Colorado. I'm gonna head out from here Wed. afternoon, and try to ride alot of dirt on the way. 700+ miles- I hope I have some knobbies left when I get there! I plan to arrive Thursday night, and head back on Sunday, maybe afternoon. I've never been to the Black Hills, so I'll need some directions to the Black Fox Campground (I don't own a gps). Save a small tent space for me! Thanks for the invite- looking forward to meeting you guys! PS- how far is the campground from a town/supplies/beer?

I can't quite make it because of work schedule conflicts. I'll be heading back east when you guys are heading west.
Hi, Hayduke, wish I could make it. I think it's more like 550 miles from your area to the Black Hills...unless you're going to be zig-zagging a lot. |

Hmmm. From Salida, Mapquest said something like 738 to Hot Springs. I plan to head to Limon, then hit dirt roads if possible. It may be closer going through Denver and slabbing it. I'm about 120 miles from Denver, IIRC.edit: Nope, I was wrong.... 607 mi. roughly, Salida/Limon/Hot Springs. Much better!!! |

The Black Fox campground is about 9 miles from Rochford, look at this map.
http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/blackhills/maps/recguide2.jpg This campground is pretty much out in the boonies, about 20 miles from Hill City I think ( or maybe Rochford is 20 miles from Hill city, can't remember ). Rochford has the Moonshine Gulch Saloon which has good food and you can get some carry out beer. The Sugar Shack on Hwy 385 has food and beer too, as well as Cheyenne Crossing to the north. Most of the supplies will need to be brought in from Hill City most likely. There will be a few trucks there so I'll see if they can haul out a couple gas cans and a big cooler and some firewood. The best bet is to eat in the last town you run through or cook in camp and pick up supplies in town too. The Black Fox campground is fairly small, maybe 9 sites. If it looks like we'll need more than 3 sites, I might just find a place I can make reservations for us at since I don't want to lock up the whole place. Each site has plenty of room for 2-3 2 man tents though, so we should be OK. Maps. The Forest Service has a great free map that you can get in most towns like Custer and Hill City at the ranger stations and sporting goods stores. There are also a 2 map set available from National Geographic that is good too. Here is a link to the forest service sites maps http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/blackhills/maps/ I'll do some more work on this tonight after work.

Chad, I am still planning on BH! That is barring a last minute horse show. I need to check milage, time available, daughter's B-day is 23rd & wife 30th, but this type of conflict happens every year, and which bike, ride will be 950 and truck out will be 625. If possible, I would like to join up others going that way. I will look over last years report, thanks for the effort!
