Awww fellas nobody mentioned to look here (link below).
We can mate a StarCom1 to ANY 2 way, beats Auto and Baeher for price , in stock for next day delivery, and works (crystal clear) at 160kph on a 30 year old Ducati 900 with "Conti's" . You cant ask for more than that !!

I wouldn't recommend Hard wired setup for all the unexpected ground noise woes, but what I have done is added a 12v output/charger on the bike (from dick smith) and when radio is not in use I have a switch to charge battery, eg when on a long trip I switch it for overnite charge, it will not draw more than 1AMP, and you still have grunt to start bike next morning, or you can charge on the fly but this dosn't allow me to TX but I can still RX.

I would not rely on a UHF-CB (even a 5 watt in-car unit) for emergency communications.

If you are thinking this way then the minimum I would go for would be a EPIRB or an EPiRB and a satphone if you can afford it

Alrighty, I appreciate the replies and PM's, and have also chatted to a few people on the phone. All great advice.

I am going to run the Uniden 078 5W waterproof unit on a mount on the bars. It is supplied with a spare battery, and I will hook up a 12V socket and take the charger on longer rides.

Can anyone suggest a good mount to suit this hand held? I am going to start doing some searching now, so haven't got many ideas yet!

I have purchased in the last week a Garmin Rino 520 and so far it's great 5 watt uhf plus gps combined and i picked it up brand new for $530 which is about what you pay for a 5 watt radio any way and saves the space of mounting 2 units plus waterproof as well.

but i dought you will find one for that hand held. you may have to use a mount for another type & use a pice of bike tube as a rubber band to hold it in the cradle.

for the $ your paying you would be better of buying the garmin rhino 520.
