Numbers is onto it. When I had soft luggage, I did use them as anchors.

If you didn't know, this is what Steg Pegz do (lifted from their web site)

My friend has a 2012 DRZ400 (purch Apr/12) with an hanging idle problem.. He's done a DJ jet kit and it ran fine after, Now, it won't idle down. He wants to take it to the dealer for warranty work, but because of the jet kit figures he's gonna have a problem. Is there a common problem that happens to these bikes that he should be aware of? Thanks.

I would imagine you would have trail rides in the Canada that would require an extended fuel range, maybe not water which is an issue in travelling in Australia.
After seeing the pictures of trails and tracks in this thread, I must admit to feeling a little jealous of the fantastic and varied terrain you have and Lord willing to be able to do some adventure riding in Canada and the USA.

Well I have to say I really enjoyed my short visit to OZ a few years ago(on my way to NZ for kitesurfing) and would like to visit for a longer trip sometime, its a wonderful piece of the planet.
So you would be very welcome to the great white north anytime but the 5 month of winter we have other FUN in.

In the meantime keep doing the unsupported rides its a great achievement

There is nothing that I've heard of that is generic to these DRZ S or SM models that would cause this issue.
If it were my bike I would make sure the throttle cable is closing down all the way as soon as the twist grip is released. Lube the cable and throttle system. Check free play. Make sure the grip or handguard isn't interfering. If it doesn't work talk to the dealer mechanic or service manager about what you have modified to see if it's going to be a warranty stopper.

Try turning down the idle as low as it will go and still run. This has worked for me in the past.

My guesses would be , either the throttle cables arent properly adjusted or the carb wasnt reseated properly in the boots.

Hanging idle is often an intake air leak. Sure the vacuum line to the petcock is kosher?

Gouge in fork tube/

So I recently picked up a DRZ400S and it had a leaking fork seal. Since it was leaking I figured I would freshen up the oil and spring it for me. Upon inspection of the tubes I found one with a gouge in it that the previous owner tried to clean up. I suspect that's where the leak is coming from...either from when the damage occurred or it tore up the replaced seal. The owner acted like he had never been in the forks so maybe he just tried to clean up the damage and never replaced the seal. Either way if I run it with the gouge should I just expect it to leak or is there any chance that it will be fine? If its going to leak most likely then I will just start looking for a replacement.

Anyone got a spare left fork lying around that's straight and useable?

Got the new drz off in some dirt and woods today. First gear is definitely too tall for much riding woods trails.
What sprockets are yall using to slow this thing down ? I'm not too worried about losing speed on the top end--it seems to have way more than I'm likely to use very often.

Phoneman,

For mostly dirt riding, whether I ride a few miles or trailer, I run a 13/48 sprocket set (3:69 ratio) vs the stock 15/44 (2.93 ratio). With that setup I can run 60mph on pavement fairly comfortably without the feeling I've got a grenade between my legs.

When I went to the 48 rear sprocket, I also bought a new chain, 116 links and had to take one or two links out of it to get proper adjustment range to be able to switch between 15/14/13 CS sprockets. The stock chain is a little short for the 48 rear sprocket. If you want to stay with the stock rear sprocket, you can find as low as a 12t CS sprocket, but those are very hard on your chain. Stick with the 13t CS sprocket and that will give you a 3:38 final ratio, which does help.

Lots of options out there and I've got an Excel spreadsheet that I'll be glad to share if you want to look at all the permutations of CS/Rear sprocket ratios.

Cheers

I like 14/47 combo (stock E setup), works quite well off road. It will still run a steady 70mph if necessary, although I don't make it a habit. Pulls 3rd gear wheelies nicely.
