I read somewhere that if removing the header bolts, when you go to insert them back, you should use some anti seize on those 2 bolts, is that really needed? and if so, can i just use a bit of grease on them and insert? do not have any anti seize.

The grease will burn off....but you can use Mallox (?), stomach stuff, as a suitable substitute.

Are there spindles threaded into the swing-arm? I have an old set of stands for my GSXR collecting dust since i sold the bike, it would be nice to rig them up to the DRZ for when i do work.
Does this help?

A friend gave me a pair of them awhile ago. The other is a post type rack for the front wheel (I guess)...
I've normally only use it with the smaller bikes..it's steady but not overly sturdy.

It was good meeting you Dave, I believe we are both extremely satisfied with our swap. Can't wait to see what your next plans are for the DRZ, I frequent this thread so I'll be able to keep up with it!

Lots of plans for the KLX
Glad to hear it....
as for next plans...single track riding this weekend, racing (more like riding) in a hare scramble on Jan 6th...
and on the 7th, I'll be ordering replacement parts for things I broke on the 6th

BTW, it is interesting to me how something like a WR transmission for the DR-Z can generate a large amount of discussion with plenty of advice and opinion from experts, but when it comes to actually fronting with the money there are very few takers. I guess they are all still waiting for the 6 speed transmission.

I reckon you're right about where the value lies with these things as the DR-Z is not a lot of fun for extended riding at highway speeds. I am not particularly keen on pulling a sprocket that has been lathered with Loctite and then torquing that nut with a minimalist tool kit by the side of the road... The only time that is cheaper and easier is in the comfort of my own workshop.

Value is more what I get out of it not what it is worth to somebody else... If it means that I can ride the bike all over and enjoy it instead of disliking the ride for the bikes shortcomings then it is money well spent. Some people might go out and buy a different bike and then have to deal with a different set of shortcomings.
I installed the Nova WR gearbox for over a year and am very happy with it. I have done about 12,000km most in ADV rides but also some trail riding. I use the bike in NZ and Aussie and find the ratios good for all round long distance use. Nothing is perfect (except a 6 speed which Nova quoted me at more than the cost of a new DRZ400) but this is a great mod for a good light weight bike to be used for ADV riding. I have two DRZ400's and would like to do a similar upgrade to my other bike and would be interested to hear of folks who have the ACT solution which is considerably less expensive. I look at the ACT ratios and I am concerned about the gap between 4th and 5th. With a standard (which i have and will keep for ADV for reliability) engine running the bike on the open road in a strong head wind or up a steep high I doubt you could pull 5th gear. I run 15/44 with the Nova gears and I find that a good all round solution for my type of riding. Comments from ACT or Nova riders would be much appreciated.

You are right lots of folks talk about it very few do it!

If i am seeing this correctly is looks like the stand itself is modified with a grip of some sort to grab the square portion of the swing arm. There are no modifications/brackets on the bike for it. Looks good. Maybe instead of selling mine I'll spend an hour in the machine shop making something similar.

Thanks for the pic.

Hi Westy,

The engine with the new trans went back into the bike last weekend... It has had some dyno time over the weekend to dial in safe mixtures and a couple of hundred clicks on the road before going back to the dyno for final tuning and power runs... plus a couple more hours on the road. I am happy with it so far, but it remains to be seen how I get along with it in soft conditions.

The rationale behind the Nova for me was getting a sane 5th for highway cruising while still retaining the crawling ability of an acceptably low first and I am kind of surprised at your 15/44 gearing with this transmission and especially with a stock engine...

The gearing choices that I have made are 15/47 and 15/49 and the latter is currently fitted. Even with the 15/49 it is still pulling (in a common frame of reference for others) a slightly taller fifth than a stock transmission with 16/44 which is about as tall as I'd ever suggest going with a stock engine... that is about the point where, IMO, the bike starts to become over geared.

That was the old way those track stands worked before spools became common.
The company that makes your stand may even still sell that style of attachment, or as you note, you could make some.

I have a spool style stand I use on my Versys.
For the DRZ I replaced the rear axle cotter pin with a quick pin.
Then I simply pull the pin and slide socket wrench extensions in the axle holes of the DRZ.
I have even thrown screw drivers in the holes when I have my extensions in use.

The DRZ swing arm is much narrower than my Versys so the extensions stick out pretty far where the contact the spool stand, but the bike is so light its not a big deal.

Works great for chain maintance.

I post up a pick later.

Great day for a ride. The sun was shining and the roads were fairly dry.

The seller says that he took it off his 2001 DRZ and put back the stock pipe because he didn't have the 3x3 mod and carb jetted.

Please comment if you have an idea about these questions, and it's value?

Thanks!!!
I just put a Leo Vince exhaust on my DRZ 400S (got a smokin deal from Forrest at Wheeling Cycle Supply ) the exhaust was from an E model and the mount behind the passenger peg was close, but wouldn't line up (about an inch off), so I went down to my local muffler shop and the guy welded a SS washer on the pipe mount, worked great and he only charged me $20, which was less then I would have spent in beer money to have my friend weld it

I bought it, and found out that it came off of a "S" model DRZ, so I am good to go. Just wait'n for some time to free up to install it. For $160 for a full system Yosh system, I think it will be a great add.

Can someone give me a measurement on a spark plug wrench please?

Hi guy's, I've not long been the owner of a nice 2003 400S, which came to me with no tool kit.
What I need for her is a spark plug socket / wrench, and also some information, like are they special as per my other squeeze the XR400, which needs to be thin enough to get down the tunnel.
Therefore I need to know the overall length, and also what size, eg:- 16 mm 18 mm etc.
Thanks in advance,
Mark.
