the sm has 260 mm in the front (with the usd forks of course) and 276 mm in the back (to compensate for the smaller front wheel I suppose). that's almost 2-3 cm difference in travel compared to the newer s model (and 4-5 cm of ground clearance at 260 mm compared to the sm albeit with the 17 inch front wheel).

now my questions: in which situations are these differences noticeable? is it just relevant for hardcore enduro/cross? what's the ground clearance on the sm once it has a 21/18 set-up? I wouldn't over think this.

to what extent can the travel on the sm be changed when re-working the standard showa forks?

now i can get these numbers from the internet easily but i have no experience to "read" them. i appreciate every help! : thumb:
I've ridden my SM many miles of dirt roads and 2 track trails. I have never bottomed the suspension or the skid plate, so I would say it's only a concern if riding hard core rough terrain.

My question is would I be that much happier with a new DRZ400(I realize it's hard to beat a new bike) over just staying with my 350? Money isn't really an issue in the decision. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also, the local dealer has a good price on a DR650 which doesn't seem all that much lighter than my DL650.
Thanks, Don

the drz floods just as easily. it does however clear floods very quickly with the magic button.
dr350-400:
suspension is an upgrade
power upgrade
handling meh
brakes meh

I really like the dr, all of them. the drz is just what I have now, and love it.

the biggie the drz400 has over a dr350 is the after market leans more in favor of the drz400.

I'd like some inmates opinions on this:

http://tucson.craigslist.org/mcd/3713285646.html

I'm guessing it doesn't run, he says it needs a carb clean and a new battery. I want to make him an offer, but what do you think a good offer would be? I'm thinking about $1800. I have no way of knowing what else might be wrong with the bike, so I don't know how much it's going to take to fix it.

+1

I put a zip tie on my fork to see how much travel I was using in Moab last year. Dropping off a few ledges, big rocks and small jumps and used only 75% of my travel. Never felt harsh and never felt wanting for more. It's feels firmer than an S fork but it's very forgiving in the rough stuff. I likey.

No way I'd pay that much for a bike that doesn't run.

Titled & Plated?

I see a mirror, but it looks like an E model.
Around here you can pick up a really nice untitled E model for about $1800
A non-runner maybe $1000 or less.
But plating an E here is tough.

It is an E model. Not plated as far as I know, but in AZ that's no big deal. You can plate anything here (I mean anything, ATV's, RZR's, anything, the DMV says they just issue the plate, it's up to the owner to make sure the vehicle complies with all laws, and the police to enforce them, one of the things I love about AZ).

Thinking about it a bit more, if it has a clean title I'm thinking I'll offer $1500. And be extremely firm on the offer. There's a running, plated '04 E, with a skid plate, case savers, and a Baja designs DS kit for $2600 I'm looking at Sunday (the guy says he's got someone looking at it tomorrow, so if it doesn't sell, I'm looking at it sunday.)

We'll see. I got my tax return and it's burning a hole in my pocket.

Solid plan. Don't let the fact that you have the money sway you from waiting for a good bike to surface. DRZ's are always popping up for sale, and you will get a good one if you hold out for it.

I'd just look at it from the point of "As much as I pay, I'm willing to lose". You know what I mean.

You could offer $1500, he accept, you get the bike, and you just chase gremlin after gremlin until you give up and sell for parts (probably lose the better part of $1500).

Hopefully not, but I would look at a non-runner from that standpoint.

I'd not want to pay than $1k for something I couldn't hear/see run.

My father bought one that didn't run. Granted, he bought it for $800. Filled it with fresh gas, charged the battery and it fired right up. From there it got new tires, new chain, and some grease. I bought it from him and have not had any issues with it. All I have done is put a new rear fender on it.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Hopefully I'll get to look at the runner and buy it, rather then possibly deal with a lot of problems on the one that doesn't run.

I'd rather not lose $1500, although I imagine I could part it out for more then that. Truthfully though I'd rather not deal with the hassle of doing that either. I wonder if he would go lower then $1500.
