I was working my way down to Dover, TN on some back roads and came across another cemetery.

I'm on a cool dirt road...

When I found what turned out to be more of the Linton OHV area!!

This side was full of uphills and downhills and was FAST!

Just when I'm having too much fun, tragedy strikes. A stump and my foot, a punishing blow. Ouch, that really, really hurt. It hurts enough to be broken, this will be a tough one to walk off. Thank god I was wearing MX boots.

That damn stump is in the bottom of this picture.

In an attempt to distract myself from the pain, and to convince myself I didn't have a serious injury, only one hour into my day long ride, I staged a happy self portrait.

Here's an abridged itinerary of where we'll be and when:

July - Deer Lake, MT - West Yellowstone, MT - Victor, ID - West Glacier, MT
November - Reading, PA
Hey NS - We are planning to be out in West Yellowstone at the end of July, should get there about 7/28. We are also planning on riding up to Glacier NP the week of Aug 6th. Any chance that we could connect then in either Yellowstone or Glacier??

We live near Reading, PA so when you get in that area send me a PM and we'll hook up for a ride!

Have a great trip!!

I passed another cemetery on the way to Dover, but my mind was on anti-inflamatories. I stopped at a convenience store and bought some Gatoraid and Advil and sat on the bench outside with some oldtimer local guy. I asked him if he minded if I pulled my stinky foot from my stinky boot to inspect it for damage, his reply was in a foreign (to me) mumbled tounge, but I think it was, do what you want. I could wiggle my toes and all so it should be OK. I let my bare foot bask in the warm sunshine while I finished my Gatoraid at a leisurely pace while watching large breasted females pump gas with my new buddy. The best part of this little scene is when we were busted by a young woman watching us watch the women at the pump. I could hardly contain myself.

I was riding back toward camp, some many miles away when the Advil started taking effect and away I went. I saw this cemetery on my GPS and crossed a farmers field and actually found a sign pointing me in the right direction.

This road gradually deteriorated into nothingness. I turned around, without finding my destination, bummed.

Back on the paved road to Kentucky Lake, I passed a spur that was just aching to be explored. Away I went! I got to this little stream crossing.

I had a tough decision to make. Continue on into what looked like, for sure, an area meant for non-motorized travel, on a nearly broken foot, or to turn back and continue adventure elsewhere. I'm sorry to disappoint you all, but I was alone, blah, blah, blah, turned around, and I was off.

My foot was feeling better and I was much happier. Saw a sign that read, Confederate Cemetery, and down another dirt road I went.

The cemetery.

Grave marker.

The Cumberland and Tenneessee rivers were vital for the Union to control in order to defeat the Confederate army during the Civil War. I would find many more grave sites like this one on this day.

I stopped to make a new friend. He didn't say much either.

Another cemetery and a good example of the many infant graves.

I found some more great roads.

My day was coming to a close and I was heading back, until I took another spur. I was expecting it to be a short road to another dead end like so many of the other spurs I had been on today. However, this one just kept going and going and going and going...

This road was really muddy. I was getting a little concerned, I was not in any condition to be pulling my nearly 500 pound bike from this Kentucky suction mud, but I pressed on. When in doubt, twist and shout. It's saved me in the past and I planned to use it again if I had too.

This road actually came out somewhere, somewhere not far from the Turkey Bay OHV park in LBL. I swung by to check it out, and check out the hottie park ranger in the fee booth.

The nice park ranger hooked me up with a map of the roads in LBL. It had three classifications of roads in the park, paved, gravel, and may be impassible! How cool is that! Inspecting the map, I had found that some of my favorite haunts of the day were of that later classification!

My day was done, my foot was thumping, the Advil had worn off. I finished the day with about 140 miles and 28 cemeteries. A great day of adventure and discovery.

My foot at the end of the day.

It didn't look too bad. When I told my wife what had happened, she immediately suggested we run the bike back to PA for the rest of the trip. She came around, after a few days of convincing her I was ok, and everything would be ok.

Most of my foot was black and blue after a few days. I kept hiking and mountain biking. I haven't had the opportuny to get back on the KTM yet. I'm sure I'll be on it by the end of next week at Grand Marias, MN.

Riding Superior National Forest - Minnesota

I picked up a map from the nice ranger at the Grand Marais National Forest station that showed all the roads in Superior NF and which roads were open to ATV's. With this and some other maps in hand, I was on the Gunflint Trail by 7AM.

The Grand Marais overlook.

Long morning shadows.

It wasn't long before I was on my first gravel road. And it wasn't but two minutes until I saw a moose. Just standing there saying, go ahead, take my picture, I dare you!

I started moving forward, closer to the moose to get a better shot. As I approached the moose started running along the road at my pace. As I increased speed, the moose increased speed, until it ran down a trail off the road.

I took a run up to Ball Club Lake. There was one boater out on the water, but I don't think that you can see him in these pictures.

Then I headed down "The Grade". That's a pretty cool name for a road.

The Grade is an ultrafast well graded gravel road. I was easily going way faster than I should be.

I had to slow things down and was very happy to see this.

It started out nice enough.

Then it got a little tight.

And then it just grew shut. A sign of things to come for sure.
