Thumb Big Bear ADV Gathering May 18-20th 2007

Back in March Trey650 posted a message in the western regional forum looking for anyone interested in Big Bear ADV gathering for May 18-20th. Quite a few people chimed in and a spot was decided… Hanna Flat campground on the north side of Big Bear Lake about 2 miles north of fawnskin. (for those not familiar with Big Bear it is in the San Bernardino mountains about an hour and change southwest of Los Angeles.. elevation 5800 ft.

The plan was to everyone to meet on Friday night or Saturday morning and do some weekend riding. I headed up Thursday afternoon and found the campground virtually empty except for a couple of spots. I rolled into my reserved spot and found none other than the famous Trey650 himself..

(That's Trey650's rig in the background)

Thursday night was mello ... just three ADV guys.. Trey650, Myself (Shleppy) and CanPile

Late Thursday night Zig650 rolled in and then early Friday TwoWheelsGood Rolled in. We all decided to take off for a morning ride. All these guys are experienced riders and were cool enough to take a pretty green rider (me) along with them. I have to say I was initially a bit aprehensive because I have only been riding for a two months and had only ridden local stuff near my house. This was my first real dirt outing and I was setting out on a ride with three experienced riders - the king of Baja, a navy seal and an ironman traithlete trainer. These guys knocked their pace back and made me feel right at home. I was completely comfortable in about 2 minutes.

(That's Zig650 ready to roll. Trey650 in the background)

We Headed down 3n16 and over to Doble Trail Camp and soaked up the sites. Some cool old mining remnants were still around.

We then doubled back on 3n16 and headed for the Metzler mine. We stopped of and hiked up a short 1/4 mile trail to the mine entrance. That's Trey's Ass in the foreground and the shiny domes of Zig650 and TwoWheelsGood in the front. Don't worry... Trey650 and I were representin' the folicly gifted so the bald to hair ratio (commonly known as the BTH ratio) was 50/50

There was a decent size opening to crawl into and then the mine opened up a bit to maybe 5 1/2 feet tall. (Zig650 posing for a photo op.. or maybe taking a dump.. I'm not sure)

It was pitch black in there but we had a flashlight so could cruise around a bit. Trey650 and TwoWheelsGood cruised down one of the tunnels and hung out for a bit. (That's TwoWheelsGood walking)

Hmmm... those two were in there a bit too long.. I wonder what they were doing . Whoops..... how did that image get there? It was pitch black in there so your guess is as good as mine but all I know is that Trey650 was smiling a bit too much on the way out. (here is Trey650 is heading back out)

We then cruised around Holcomb valley on a number of fireroads and then down to Holcomb creek. I think Trey650 and TwoWheelsGood charaged right across first leaving Zig650 and I. Zig650 being the cool guy he is hungback and then stopped and mumbled something about "you want to cross ?". I was thinking to myself.. well I don't really have an option if I want to find my way back to the campground (I was not familiar with the trails) so what the hell? ... this was going to be my first stream crossing

I went across and made it without too much trouble and then cought up to Trey650 and TwoWheelsGood on the other side who promptly doubled back and crossed the stream again back to where we started... I followed them across again .... a lot of fun ! I really apreciated the other guys holding back their pace to showing me some new terrain.

here is a shot of the holcomb creak crossing we rode twice.. I'm guessing it was maybe 15 to 20 feet across and a few feet deep at the deepest spot.. pretty mellow for most riders but fun for a newb ) By the way I think this is the same spot that someone took a dip in the next day on the 'hard ride'. http://zenslug.smugmug.com/photos/154740290-L.jpg. Me thinks max rousting is in order for someone

We headed back to he campground to find lots of other ADV guys showing up. I hooked up with OCBlue650, KLRRob and Rick (sorry can't remember the screen name) and headed up to Butler peak where a really cool old fire lookout tower is still clinging to the rocks. (yours truly on the trail up to the tower)

Here is a shot of the stairs leading up to the tower.

KLRRob enjoying the view

Another view from the tower.

We left the tower and headed back down towards Hanna Flat campground. Along the way we found a small creek crossing to wash our bikes off in. Here is a shot of me crossing the creek. (Thanks again for the photo OCBlu650 ) Needless to say I was a bit wet after this.

We arrived back at camp to find maybe 30 or so other ADVriders setting up camp and/or returning from rides. We probably had 1/4th of the camground filled with ADV guys.. how freaking sweet is that! That was the end of day one for me.. more info and Pics of Saturday to come.

Saturday report...

Saturday started off with a boat load of riders ready to roll out on rides. It would have been a logistical nightmare for everyone to ride together so we broke into a few groups of rides. Being a pretty new rider I opted for the easier ride.

here is a shot of everyone getting ready to roll.

We headed out of the campground, down 3n14 and over to 3n08 (I think). Here is OCBlue 650 rounding the transition onto 3n14.

We came across this short technical section (or at least technical for some of us on the easier ride) A couple of people dabbed but everyone got up and over eventually.

We cruised along for a bit longer until we hit a section of hill with some small loose rocks. Once again everyone made it up the hill as well. Here is a shot of Stephanie (INVNO1) charging up the hill just before the steeper loose section. This woman rips ! This shot just doesn't do the actual terrain justice becuase right outside the photo things got a bit steeper and a bit loose.

0H5DRZ at the same spot.

Here is a shot looking up the hill from where the two previous riders were pictured.... lookes a bit steeper from this angle don't it !

We then headed across 3n16 and stopped for some photos of the historicall stuff right along the road.

Long2Ride and InvNo1 in the cottage in holcomb valley. Awwwww.. Aint that cute ! (insert sound of me gagging here). That's Matthew on the left pulling a little voyeur action.

We then headed down to dead cow hollow. Ok.. maybe that isn't quite rite. I think it was actually called cactus flats but after seeing this lovely little sight I think it has a new name. (and yes... and if you are wondering..... a rotting cow carcus smells as bad as bad as you might think.. yep.. even worse than the smell of TwoWheelsGood's 3 day old riding socks. By the way we are taking up a collection for him to get a 2nd pair. (Sorry...could not resist that one Rich after you made that comment about how you only brought one pair of socks for the weekend)

LongToRide then made a solo charge up this crazy steep hill for some unkown reason . Under normal circumstances he would probably have no trouble at all but his sea level jetting was't really optimal for a hill climb so he was forced back down to Stank Junction where were were all watching.

We then followed 3n03 all the way out to pioneer town. I think the distance was something like 25 miles and change. here are some photos on the way to Pioneer town.

Here is OCBlue650 adjusting the antennas on his head.. or something like that.

We saw about 147,712 of these on the way.

then we hit Pappy and Harriets in Pioneer town for some lunch. Really cool place even it is in the middle of BFE.

Three from our crew entering the restaurant. That's KLRRob one the left who slipped into something more comfortable and tried to hook up with one of the locals. Nice 10 gallon Rob . (OK..maybe I fabricated a bit of that last part)

We sat down and had 15 pitchers of water and some lunch on the patio. On the left is Micheal, Scott, Zack and.. Matt (I think). Chris and Mathew on the right.

Right behind us was this small old looking western town. I'm guessing this was Pioneer town.

We wrapped up lunch and doubled back onto 3n03.

Instead of going all the way back the same way we came (which would put is back at funky odor crossing) we hung a left off of 3N03 onto 2n01 and over to 2n04 (I think) which took us towards onyx peak and hwy 38. Here is a shot of Micheal just after rounding corner on his KTM 950 super enduro and heading towards onyx peak. (You ImGonnoSnap.. I know a guy who has a clutch cover for a rare super enduro ..unfortunatley you'll have to pry the parts from Michael's cold dead hands to get it!). By the way.. Michail is the man who we all owe thanks to for the great grill work at the bar-b-que later in the evening. Hats off to him for doing a great job!

We then hit a pretty lengthy steep shale climb that was extremely challenging for some of us newer riders. I really hope someone took a picture of this section. At the end of this section was hwy 38 that we followed back to Big Bear City. Here is a shot of where we poked out on hwy 38.

More photos of the evening pot-luck / bar-b-que to come.

Had a great time, thanks to all!
Finding out I won the 'oldest guy here' contest was a dubious honor, however.

BTW, next time oldfatguyMAN wants advance notice that the guy leading the 'hard' ride is a professional triathalon trainer!
What was I thinking?

later in the evening we all sat down and had pot luck. A pretty good spread of rib eye steak, carne asada, hot dogs, chips, salsa, guacamole, rice beans and booze was on hand. Everyone definately had plenty to eat. We capped off the evening with OcBlue650's now famous apple/blueberry cobbler.

Here is Stephanie, Dirtjunkie, MrMike and LongToRide kickin' at the camp fire. OCBlue650 is cooking up the crowd favorite blueberry/apple cobbler in he background. Either that or he is about to BA all of us.. I did have a few drinks so my memory could be hazy here. DustJunkie was workin' some freestyle stick meat over the fire. (yes the "stick meat" euphemism went around the campfire several times ). Not sure what Stephanie (INVNO1) is doing here... oh yeah she was hookin' us up with some musical entertainment by playing her hand flute.

Another shot of the campfire with Creapy Animatronic Norweigan Troll gesturing about his past life at Disneyland...I think he is acting out what he did every day in his past life. If you were not there that will make no sense at all so I encourage you to ask DustJunkie what the hell that means if you are interested.

Big Bear was a BLAST!

First of all thank you to all the guys for looking after this girl on our ride. You all are true gentlemen and scholars A big "THANK YOU" to Matt (focallength) for the great ride and wonderful direction. Another big "THANK YOU" to the Schleppmeister for the wonderful pics. You constantly amaze me with your great shots that are accompanied by clever quips.

The ride was fantastic. Just challenging enough but lots of different terrain. I can't believe I have lived in Big Bear nearly all my life and NEVER knew there was this much fun in my own back yard.

To close, met some great guys and had a whole lot of laughs. Sometimes it is a great thing to be the only girl in a crowd of guys-That is until the "stick meat" comments were being passed around.

INVNO1 (AKA Stephanie)

P.S. Thanks for backing my decision to bet Rich $5 on the ride up that hill. I now have $10 to loan him to put towards the new mirror he needs to replace the one the hill gods ate on his tumble down towards the Joshua Trees.

P.P.S. Thanks Matthew for putting himself between me and a 200' cliff. You were a great source of encouragement.

Nice pics, sheppy!

My pics of the 'hard rides' are uploading now, but it might be a couple days before I have time to put an actual ride report together.

I think my suspension is too limited for the rock crawling, not to mention too heavy for a GSA. GAWD that looks fun. I rode that main road loop last year at be big bear ralley. Only dumped it once on the sand.

U ladies SURE had a good time. Its only a TRUE ADV event if the riders are all dirty in the pics around the evening camp-fire.

Zach.. I think your right... OCBlue was not adjusting his antennas... he was looking over longingly at you while doing that stripper dance move where you put your hands on your head and shake your money maker... .

Nice meeting you and your bro this weekend.

Some of us headed over to Grizzly Manor Cafe on Sunday for breakfast. If you have not checked this place out you must !

The food is awesome and there is tons of it. The staff are awesome too... funny as hell and willing to jump in with a smart ass stab every now and then... my kind of people. Here is a shot of Oh5DRZ rolling in for breakfast.

We headed in and Long2Ride and InvNo1 had a table waiting. Thanks again for saving us a spot! Here is a shot of us grubbin... left to right yours truly (Shlepp) OCBlue650, INVNO1, Long2Ride and Oh5DRZ.

Check out the size of this pancake !!! This is what you get when you order 1 pancake. It's actually two pancakes with a filling in between them. The total cost for this mound o' food...... $3.50.

And if you want waffles..... you have come to the right place too! Here is what OcBlue650's meal looked like.

And here is the shot of the day... (left to right) Mathew, Zach and his bro waiting for their breakfast to arrive. For those of you watching at home.. this is how pictures roll ADV style

We wrapped up breakfast and headed our seperate ways. Here is a shot of Oh5DRZ packed up and ready to roll back home.

This was my first ADV gathering and I had a blast! Good rides , Good times and Great people all around. Nobody was left out and everyone was welcomed into the group.

Thanks Trey650 for setting this up and letting your site become ground Zero . More thanks goes out to Michael for cookin' up some great grub on the grille.

Special thanks to those of you who took the time to go at a slower pace and introduce the greener riders to the area when you could have been out rippin' it up and probably having a lot more fun on your own. Your payin' it forward bruthas.

Any sport that has people like this willing to sacrafice a bit of their own fun in order to open the doors to others... them is just good people!

Peace out...
