Silverado Canyon - Saddleback Peak - Hells Kitchen May 2007

Memorial weeked had arrived and I had a little time on my hands so I decided to head across the Santa Ana mountains (AKA Saddleback mountains) in the OC one more time. These mountains are right in my back yard.. I'm very lucky to have dirt so close by.

Didn't feel like riding solo so I put up a ride posting to see if anyone would join me. The plan was to meet at the Silverado Cafe (which is where a lot of rides have been starting the last few weeks) and head up to Santiago Peak and down the main divide fireroad over to Hells Kitchen on Ortega Hwy for some grub.

A few peeps showed up at the Silveardo Cafe at 9:00 AM. From Left To right in the pic below..... GreenStreak, FreeBird, GoNow and AnotherDRZGuy chewin' the fat in front of the Cafe.

Oh5DRZ was giving GoNow some razzing about how he was the only non Suzuki in the group but after we all took a gander at GoNow's pimp-daddy KTM 950 adventure, we all stopped joking and began drooling

Here's Oh5DRZ ready to roll on his (yep you guessed it...) 05 DRZ

We then rolled up Silverado Canyon Road.

Silverado Canyon Rd Turns into Maple Springs RD at this gate.

We continued up Maple Springs Rd which is still paved for the first few miles.

The pavement gives way to a graded dirt road. A very mellow road but still scenic for a place 15 minutes from a crowded Orange County just off to the west.

Here's a shot of FreeBird getting the front wheel up on Maple Springs.

Oh5DRZ heading up Maple Springs Rd.

Followed By GreenStreak on the Vstrom 1000

We took a quick pit stop where Maple Springs Rd meets the main divide.

After our break we headed up the Main Divide towards Santiago Peak. Here is a shot looking back at Modjeska Peak form the fireroad that heads up to Santiago Peak.

We soon arrived at Santiago Peak (AKA Saddleback Peak). Thers is an S-Load of Antennas up there.

Our plans where to continue along the main divide all the way to ortega hwy. Here is a shot of the Main Divide trail we were about to ride as it snakes along the ridges of the Santa Anas towads Ortega Hwy.

A couple of closer views of the Main Divide between the peak and Ortega. The trail is pretty mellow all the way over with only a few somewhat steep sections.

GoNow on the uber-capable KTM 950 heading along the main divide.

We took another short break in a shady spot along the main divide.

The fireroad turns into pavement again as you approach Ortega Hwy.

We hit ortega hwy, hung a right (west) and ended up at Hell's Kitchen. Hells Kitchen is a cool hangout where tons of bikers congregate . Plenty o' suds and tasty grub too!

We pretty much had the whole place to ourselves.... Not !!! Ths place was jumpin. There were probably around 50 motorcycles in the parking lot.

The inside of Hells Kitchen is pretty cool. The entire inside is painted blood red with flames. There is even a cool condiment bar that is built in a coffin. Just pull the little skull head and it opens up to reveal all kinds of atery clogging goodness to saturate your food with.

Our food arrived around an hour later.... did I mention it was busy. Like a dope I forgot to take photos of the food. I was too hungry to even think about it.

After grubbin at Hell's kitchen we all headed back down Ortega back to our respective homes. GoNow headed off to the east while the reast of us headed to the west. No photos of this bit of the ride.. too busy riding the 15+ miles of twisties to break out the camera.

I totally forgot I brought a camera. I did take a few photos on the way up.

Since I was on the other side of the hills, I took Bedford over and down. It was really foggy in the am. Nothing like popping over the clouds and into the sunlight.

A sea of clouds.

I had a blast. I didn't think the V-Strom would keep up, but GreenStreak did a masterful driving job. On street tires too.
Great meeting everyone.

Thanks for the ride. I am up for another one anytime. How about a night run?

Post ride inspection revealed that my rear TKC80 did not fair so well. And I was trying to save it too.

Oh, and if anyone wants to come, I am dusting off the TW200 and hitting Jack Rabbit Monday (tomorrow). Just exploring and the TW200 is easier to pull out of a ditch and less costy to dump. And I will dump it, many times.

ride the $*#(@) thing, and you'll quickly learn that the stain marks in your brooks were firstly from fear and then from ecstacy.

That is a fun ride, I've done it on my KTM 640 ADV, just as you've described... but then backtracked the entire route after having lunch at Hell's Kitchen. I look forward to doing so again as soon as I can get my bike in working order.

Vato...I was just reading the post about your ride on Monday.

Is the look out place you referred to that spot that sits on the edge of the road looking down at Elsinore? When we hit ortega from the Main Divide we took a right on Ortega instead of a left (I was following) but I was thinking we were gonna head left and would head towards the restaurant that overlooks Elsinore (which I think is where you guys were right?)
