4 Bikes + 3 Lighthouses + 1 Summersault

Craig, Steve, Doug and I headed down to Newfoundland's South Coast today, to check out a few interesting lighthouses, explore a new trail, and generally enjoy the sunny weather.

There were three high points on today's ride. The first was when the Cape Race lighthouse keeper pulled up in his truck and invited us all inside to take the climb to the top of the lighthouse. The second (for me at least) was when the keeper asked me if I'd like to climb up inside the massive spinning lighthouse lens to take a photo. And the third high-point of the day, was when I turned around on the trail from PCS to Trepassey, to see Doug do a perfect summersault right over the handle bars of his bike.

Doug was unhurt after performing his gymnastics routine, and neither was his bike. It took all four of us to lift his bike out of the hole it was sunk in, however. And Doug was a little on the damp side, after that. Best off road crash I have ever seen, Doug. You win that prize, hands down!

It was pretty interesting to see that the Cape Race lighthouse 'lightbulb' is actually not much bigger or brighter than a regular household lightbulb. The giant lens being the key to giving the light it's massive candle-power.

The only two downers of today's ride was the 90 km/hr crosswinds that we had to deal with, and the fact that Steve got himself the second flat he's had in one week.

Thank's to the guys for joining me on a new trail exploration, and for following me around while I continued my new obsession of taking photos of Newfoundland lighthouses.

Here's some snaps...

The NL glacial barrens are notorious for bottomless pits, posing as 'puddles'.

Splish, splash, now Doug needs a bath!

Very Large Iceberg

This is not a ride report, as such, but I snapped these shots of a huge iceberg, not far from the City of St. John's, yesterday.

I know many people on here who will be riding to Newfoundland or Labrador this season, so I thought you might like a look at just one of the natural wonders you are likely to see here...

For the sake of consistency, I merged your iceberg with your most recent report, since the iceberg isn't a ride report by itself..

I'll have to say no one does more to promote Newfoundland tourism than you do!

No sweat...

Good idea.

Kind of funny that I do promote NL so much...I'm not even involved with tourism in any way, business or otherwise. Just a guy who's really proud of what NL has to offer.

So now you know the light house is there for a reason, it's not the jagged rocks it's the Newfoundland puddles!
