3550 km, no highways

Hi,

just a short description of my recent journey. I did it with one goal in mind - highways are forbidden. So they were! Starting from Frankfurt towards a small village Buchenau in Bayerischer Wald. Beautiful area, great roads for bike riding all the way, especially in Bayerischer Wald (east Germany border towards Check Republic). I had to cover 760 km (using only local roads, so I there was no time for taking photos). I have just a few of them:

Next day, I did a great 450 km ride from Buchenau to Fertorakos in Hungary, passing through south Germany, eastern Austria (Karnische Alps). Weather was perfect, roads even better.

On the third day, back to Austria towards Slovenian border Podkoren (Wurzenpass) and to Mojstrana visitin my dear friend Glazar (our host from last Balkan trip). Few photos from that day:

On the fourth day I had a dream ride through Slovenia with my friend Glazar. All the best curvy roads, perfect weather, another 400 km or so... Riding was such a fun that we forgot to take photos

On the fifth day, I went from Zagreb back to Slovenia and ended again in the friends house later the day. He took us to a very beautiful area - "Dolina Vrata" under the Slovenian highest peak Triglav:

6thy day - entering Italy. This was the most beautiful ride. Starting early :

First Sella Nevea:

Then spectacular place Sauris - a 136 meter high watter barrier:

Look at this crazy guy...

Beautiful place, twisty roads:

Continuing towards Grossglockener. First over Passo Monte Croce:

Then Grossglockner:

Day 7th, ride through Austria (Gerlos) and south Germany. Beautiful weather on Grossglockner:

Great little road and scenery on the road towards Gerlos:

South Germany and the highest German peak (Zugspitze):

I stayed in a small hotel in Kisslegg, south Germany. Lake nearby:

Returning home, long ride through Schwarzwald and Odenwald:

Rain to clean my clothes and bike at the end ;)

I'll try to create a route using googlemaps. I was still using my old PDA based GPS and this one have no track logging.

Cool trip. Your local roads are just like our main highways I expected to see all gravel roads when I read the thread title.

Nice ride!

I was in the area 2 weeks ago. (Brenner, Gerlos, Tauern, Carinthia, Wurzenpass to SLO, Seebergsattel back to AUT, Soboth, Styria, Burgenland).

Good to see you had better weather than we did. Gerlos was in deep snow, the lady at the toll booth up there didn't believe her eyes when she saw us coming...

It would take weeks to cover such a distances using only unpaved roads. And loaded big touring enduro is definitely not the right tool for this

BTW, in Europe, most of the unpaved mountain roads are closed for bikes/cars. In the area I live (mid of Germany) using unpaved roads is higlhy prohibited.

Very nice!

I just found this thread. So many good threads here, it is easy to miss some really cool ride reports.

Excuse my ignorance but why? What are the unpaved roads for then?
